Cards

I bet all I had, you see;
My hand was really that good.
Here were Tom and I, playing cards
In the hospital waiting room
As if the universe depends on luck.
I excused myself and then retuned
To our game to find nothing of what
The game was before I left.
And Tom said, “You know how
These games are not set in stone.
The rules changed before
You played your hand.”
It only took a few seconds
To change a lifetime of luck.
