confessions of a troll

This is the place to shave off that long white beard and stop being philosophical; a forum for members to just talk like normal human beings.

I second that!

QFT, as Calrid would say.
My thoughts | My art | My music | My poetry

"Now that I've been doing this for 15 years, coming into contact with large numbers of people, I see that people are overwhelmingly trustworthy and generous."
-Craig Newmark, founder of Craig's List

"That is the point at which i think those fairy tales and bible stories come alive for us, as they have to. But they are really only wonderful tools, perhaps drills that create little holes in us so that what lies within our subconscious minds may address our consciousness."
-Arcturus Descending

“Imperfection is beauty, madness is genius and it's better to be absolutely ridiculous than absolutely boring.”
-Marilyn Manroe

The problem with trying to define human nature is that somebody's bound to be offended.

Sure, and I think a lot of trolls, especially on philosophy type forums might describe their motives similarly, but have decided that the 'community' as a whole is a bunch of trolls. The forum as a whole just wanks on about a bunchy of trivial stuff. Or they do not recognize truly _______________(fillin the nice adjective) philosophy. So I am not sure the motivation is unique and separates you from other trolls. Your discrimination or manner might. Or what % of the potential audience might be trolls.

Frankly I think a lot of 'normal' posting is trollish. There are so many ways to get over the idea that the other person must be an idiot. In fact one of the best ways to troll is to not quite respond to another person's posts while seeming to and while implying or stating that the other person's points were not good or well supported. I find that much worse then any formal troll's posts could ever be. (and of course I have likely done this myself, though I do think there are degrees of this and intelligence is not a filter. IOw some very intelligent (seeming?) people manage to not quite respond for months on a single thread or threads in general.

Someone popping in an defecating a zinger is so much easier to ignore or deal with.

This forum is very troll free. I personally don't see a lot of it in comparison to sites like the old Richard Dawkins Forums where creationist trolls were on every thread about anything. That's why I post here regularly, it's free of idiots for the most part.

Just to add, save editing the last post again:

God I'm good. ;)
I am sure some Creationists are trolling, but actually I would think most are not. IOW their intention is to pass on the truth as they see it, no to simply trigger angry responses and get people riled up. In a sense, to me, trolling, as the term is generally used, means someone posting to get the response and really not giving a shit about what they say. What they say is a means to an end.

The kind of trolling you mention here and I take up in my post is not like this. Here the person likely considers the content of their posts important and believes what they say, they just misinterpret, avoid, straw man, red herring their way into being unbelievably irritating.

You can make anyone feel shame, unless they are autistic or Aspergers, even then they understand right and wrong, sort of, unless they are psychopathic. TBH most trolls are either Aspergers (ie they really don't understand why they should be nice to people) or psychopaths, they use people to feed their own self inflated worth. OR NPD, there all somewhat diseased in one area or another, it's like the school bully, they only lash out because they were themselves hurt.

Incidentally someone in the UK got sent to prison for trolling for 6 months. He basically posted hateful messages on memorial sites chatising the relatives of the deceased and the deceased themselves. Nice guy. :D
“I think we can all look forward to the time when these three theories are given equal time in our science classrooms across the country, and eventually the world; One third time for Intelligent Design, one third time for Flying Spaghetti Monsterism, and one third time for logical conjecture based on overwhelming observable evidence.”

Oscar Wilde - probably.
