World Philosophy Day - 3rd Thursday of November

Not surprising that almost no one noticed this go by. Part of me regrets that philosophy has as low a profile as it does, but another part of me thinks that philosophers as a group are likely to be cynical about the ‘day for everything’ trend.

Also, not to be too much of a stereotype, but why the third Thursday in November? It sure seems like picking a random day for a celebrating a random discipline.

It’s good for it to have a low profile. Could you imagine if in the current political climate, the 2 sides fancied themselves philosophers while simultaneously ignoring the need to separate politics from philosophy? Most people aren’t smart enough to do that. Like think of the people who read atlas shrugged and then nothing else and then move on thinking they’ve got the truth of how the world is and should be because a “philosopher” said so…but on a massive scale. The thought is horrifying.
