ILP MIX CD

The holiday season is fast approaching and I thought of something we could all do for eachother, a way to share a piece of ourselves, and it’s basically free, more or less.

I will tell you what to do in this thread and then I will share my own intentions of proceeding. My hope is that you will all cooperate and proceed in the way I do.

Each member posts ONE SONG to be included in an ILP mix CD (or mp3 playlist) that we will each create on our own. Please pick the song that you a. love, b. expresses yourself in some way, c. will make people think of you when they here it.

keep in mind it can be in any genre, as long as it is obtainable and not so obscure that nobody could reasonably obtain it.

Along with your song include a SHORT blurb about why you chose it, what toi keepo in mind when we hear it, along with a general best regards to the community and the coming holidays.

My intentions: Once the list takes decent shape I will select probably my top twenty or so most intimate personas of ILP, those that hold even the slightest meaning for me. I will use Limewire or iTunes music store to obtain the tracks, and arrange them in an order, each song will be listed as the ILP users name who contributed it. I will play this disc on occasion, probvably while driving or working out, and in this way i will feel closer to all of you, not TOO close, mind you…because you’re bunch of fucking idiots. But seriously. That’s my plan. Take your time…think it through. Find the song that’s truly YOU. (Once Phaedrus started a thread of song lists and I picked up a few songs. Every time I hear Iron and Wine I feel like ILP is in the room. A nice feeling…short of getting drunk with Ben. I can’t wait to see your songs. I will post my selection soon.

Happy holidays!

Don’t be shy. There’s always next year. No one will judge you for your stupid, gay selection.

Okay here’s mine…

drumroll:

Fool On The Hill – Beatles Magical Mystery Tour Album

The first verse should spell it out…and it gets more poignant as the song continues. That’s me, the Fool.

Day after day alone on the hill,
The man with the foolish grin is keeping perfectly still,
But nobody wants to know him,
They can see that he’s just a fool,
And he never gives an answer,
But the fool on the hill
Sees the sun going down,
And the eyes in his head,
See the world spinning around.

Please cooperate you guys. Just name a fucking song. It’s really not that hard.

“Your Silent Face” New Order

You could possible graft from the “Song lyrics that define your life” thread below.

Dunamis

Thanks man.

Hey guys, lyrics that change your life might be different then the song you want officially representing you on a mix tape.

Your Silent Face comes on and all a suddenly D himself is sittin’ shotgun, glowering at you and the burrito that fell in your lap. But his presence will help you avert the oncoming truck that almost kills you…something about Wu wei tinkering around in your mind…

Track one is locked in. Anyone else?

Remember, this is your holiday gift to ILP.

Hello F(r)iends,

“Harvester of Sorrow” - Metallica

My life suffocates | Planting seeds of hate
I’ve loved, turned to hate | Trapped far beyond my fate
I give, you take | This life that I forsake
Been cheated of my youth | You turned this lie to truth

Anger!
Misery!
You’ll suffer unto me!

Harvester of sorrow | Language of the mad |Harvester of sorrow

Pure black, looking clear | My work is done soon here
Try getting back to me | Get back which used to be
Drink up! Shoot in! | Let the beatings begin!
Distributor of pain! | Your loss becomes my gain

Anger!
Misery!
You’ll suffer unto me!

Harvester of sorrow | Language of the mad |Harvester of sorrow

All have said their prayers | Invade their nightmares
To see into my eyes | You’ll find where murder lies

Harvester of sorrow | Language of the mad |Harvester of sorrow
{fade}

Yes, this is my song.

-Thirst

While I doubt I am an “intimate persona”, given my disdain for first person narrative, I believe I can contribute something to your CD. With the parameters you listed in mind, and noting that I am the supposed resident wannabe superstar of ILP…

‘Pull My Strings’- The Dead Kennedys

I’m tired of self-respect
I can’t afford a car
I wanna be a prefab superstar
I wanna be a tool
Don’t need no soul
Wanna make big money
Playing rock and roll
I’ll make my music boring
I’ll play my music slow
I ain’t no artist
I’m a businessman
No ideas of my own

I won’t offend
Or rock the boat
Just sex and drugs
And rock and roll

Drool, drool, drool, drool, drool (etc.) My payola!
Drool, drool, drool, drool, drool (etc.) My payola!

You’ll pay ten bucks to see me
On a fifteen foot high stage
Fatass bouncers kick the shit
Out of kids who try to dance
If my friends say I’'ve lost my guts"
I’ll laugh and say
That’s rock and roll
But there’s just one problem…

Is my cock big enough
Is my brain small enough
For you to make me a star
Give me a toot, I’ll sell you my soul
Pull my strings and I’ll go far

And when I’m rich
And meet Bob Hope
We’ll shoot some golf
And shoot some dope

Is my cock big enough
Is my brain small enough
For you to make me a star
Give me a toot, I’ll sell you my soul
Pull my strings and I’ll go far

Hmmm…it’s tough to narrow down to one. The newest Iron & Wine album, Woman King, is perhaps even better than Our Endless Numbered Days, albeit a bit shorter.

I’ve been on a bit of a Holly Cole kick lately, so I’d pick maybe “Blame It On My Youth” or “All The Pretty Little Horses.” Or “Fuck & Run” by Liz Phair.

Well I could spend a page qualifying my choice here. You probably know a good deal of how it would go. So let’s just imagine that I wrote it all down. Here.

Regards,

James

I dunno, this is what I see in my head when I think about the world… this is an excerpt from the song.

Coma

 • byG’n’R

Starry, starry night
Paint your palette blue and grey
Look out on a summer’s day
With eyes that know the darkness in my soul
Shadows on the hills
Sketch the trees and daffodils
Catch the breeze and the winter chills
In colours on the snowy linen land

Now I understand
What you tried to say to me
And how you suffered for your sanity
And how you tried to set them free
They would not listen
They did not know how
Perhaps they’ll listen now

Starry, starry night
Flaming flowers that brightly blaze
Swirling clouds and violet haze
Reflect in Vincent’s eyes of china blue
Colours changing hue
Morning fields of amber grain
Weathered faces lined in pain
Are soothed beneath the artists’ loving hand

Now I understand
What you tried to say to me
And how you suffered for your sanity
And how you tried to set them free
They would not listen
They did not know how
Perhaps they’ll listen now

For they could not love you
But still your love was true
And when no hope was left inside
On that starry, starry night
You took your life as lovers often do
But I could have told you Vincent
This world was never meant for one as beautiful as you

Like the strangers that you’ve met
The ragged men in ragged clothes
The silver thorn of bloody rose
Lie crushed and broken on the virgin snow

Now I think I know
What you tried to say to me
And how you suffered for your sanity
And how you tried to set them free
They would not listen
They’re not listening still
Perhaps they never will…

Here’s two songs, take your pick…

Drive - Incubus, the quintiessential existentialist rock anthem

Sometimes, I feel the fear of uncertainty stinging clear
And I can’t help but ask myself how much
I’ll let the fear take the wheel and steer.
It’s driven me before, and it seems to have a vague,
haunting mass appeal.
But lately I’m beginning to find that I
should be the one behind the wheel.

Whatever tomorrow brings,
I’ll be there with open arms and open eyes, Yeah
Whatever tomorrow brings, I’ll be there…I’ll be there.

So, if I decide to waiver my chance to be one of the hive
Will I choose water over wine and hold my own and drive?
Aah-ah-oo-o-o.

It’s driven me before and it seems to be the way
that everyone else gets around.
But lately I’m beginning to find that when
I drive myself my light is found.

Whatever tomorrow brings,
I’ll be there with open arms and open eyes, Yeahhh
Whatever tomorrow brings, I’ll be there…I’ll be there.

Would you choose water over wine…hold the wheel and drive?

Whatever tomorrow brings,
I’ll be there with open arms and open eyes, Yeah
Whatever tomorrow brings, I’ll be there…I’ll be there.

Alternatively you can listen to,

Jammin’ by Bob Marley. The lyrics don’t really have any resonance with me but one of my nicknames is benjammin and so my theme tune has become “benjammin, benjammin, and I hope you like benjammin too”. Sing along…it’s fun!

Ooh, yeah! all right!
We’re jammin’:
I wanna jam it wid you.
We’re jammin’, jammin’,
And I hope you like jammin’, too.

Ain’t no rules, ain’t no vow, we can do it anyhow:
I’n’i will see you through,
’cos everyday we pay the price with a little sacrifice,
Jammin’ till the jam is through.

We’re jammin’ -
To think that jammin’ was a thing of the past;
We’re jammin’,
And I hope this jam is gonna last.

No bullet can stop us now, we neither beg nor we won’t bow;
Neither can be bought nor sold.
We all defend the right; jah - jah children must unite:
Your life is worth much more than gold.

We’re jammin’ (jammin’, jammin’, jammin’)
And we’re jammin’ in the name of the lord;
We’re jammin’ (jammin’, jammin’, jammin’),
We’re jammin’ right straight from yah.

Yeh! holy mount zion;
Holy mount zion:
Jah sitteth in mount zion
And rules all creation.

Yeah, we’re - we’re jammin’ (wotcha-wa),
Wotcha-wa-wa-wa, we’re jammin’ (wotcha-wa),
See, I wanna jam it wid you
We’re jammin’ (jammin’, jammin’, jammin’)
I’m jammed: I hope you’re jammin’, too.

Jam’s about my pride and truth I cannot hide
To keep you satisfied.
True love that now exist is the love I can’t resist,
So jam by my side.

We’re jammin’ (jammin’, jammin’, jammin’), yeah-eah-eah!
I wanna jam it wid you.
We’re jammin’, we’re jammin’, we’re jammin’, we’re jammin’,
We’re jammin’, we’re jammin’, we’re jammin’, we’re jammin’;
Hope you like jammin’, too.
We’re jammin’, we’re jammin’ (jammin’),
We’re jammin’, we’re jammin’ (jammin’).
I wanna (I wanna jam it wid you) - I wanna -
I wanna jam wid you now.
Jammin’, jammin’ (hope you like jammin’ too).
Eh-eh! I hope you like jammin’, I hope you like jammin’,
’cause (I wanna jam it wid you). I wanna … wid you.
I like - I hope you - I hope you like jammin’, too.
I wanna jam it;
I wanna jam it.

Nice! I will compile a clean list after we get twenty or so. I was just kidding about the intimate persona thing. I want some newbies on my list, too. And Gater, c’mon bro. You know I have a softspot for you, even though you crack a lot less jokes these days.

Phaedrus, the point is YOU have to choose. We all get one song. Don’t cheat. It has to be a song that represents YOU. Your theme song. Like the Sox had Don’t STop Believing, by Journey. LIke that, only not.

Your motivational skills are enourmeous.

I choose Bydlo by Mussorgsky.

Both because it is a very visual song, but because I feel it represents life in many ways.

Pluss I feel it is a song many people can learn a litle from enjoying.

It’s one of my favourite songs, but every song describes me in a different way by itself. It’s called Before I Forget, played by Slipknot. Here is short part of the song:

Well, it really ‘justifies my means’ - confused, strange, not according to standart - just like me.

But thirst4metal’s choice is my second option

Waitin’ for Superman - The Flaming Lips

Swastika Eyes - Primal Scream

The Model - Kraftwerk (greatest band ever…)

Although I have little bearing on conversations here, and probably very few people take note of my existence in threads, I might as well go ahead and give it a shot.

Come Undone - Duran Duran

Mine, immaculate dream, made breath and skin, I’ve been waiting for you,
Signed, with a home tattoo, happy birthday to you was created for you.

(can’t ever keep from falling apart… at the seams)
(can’t I believe you’re taking my heart… to pieces)

Ahh, it’ll take a little time, might take a little crime to come undone
Now we’ll try to stay blind, to the hope and fear outside,
Hey child, stay wilder than the wind
And blow me in to cry.

Who do you need?
Who do you love?
When you come undone.

(chorus)

Words, playing me deja vu, like a radio tune I swear I’ve heard before,
Chill, is it something real, or the magic I’m feeding off your fingers

(can’t ever keep from falling apart… at the seams)
(can I believe you’re taking my heart… to pieces)

Lost, in a snow filled sky, we’ll make it alright, to come undone,
Now we’ll try to stay blind, to the hope and fear outside,
Hey child, stay wilder than the wind -
And blow me in to cry.

(chorus)

P.S. And personally I would have gone with the Don McLean version of Vincent, but to each her own, LA.

Hello F(r)iends,

Pax, I thought I was the only one that truly loved “Coma.” I especially like the part where you hear the heartbeat… and the flatline…

“Zap the sonofabitch again!”

-Thirst

That’ll do too.
