Greatest Movies of All Time?

what are the greatest movies of all time?

i nominate many of the films by Stanley Kubrick, or more his collected works in general, but especially 2001: A Space Odyssey and Eyes Wide Shut, and possibly also A Clockwork Orange. i would also consider The Dark Knight and Watchmen as two of the greatest action/epics of all time, along with the Lord of the Rings trilogy. and i would have to throw in the original Star Wars trilogy films as well, of course. other than that, i dont usually like the more “classic” “famous movies” (Casablanca and all that…) that seem to top lists of “best films of all time”… i understand why they are rated as some of the best, i just dont like them personally (couldnt stand Lawrence of Arabia, would probably prefer a root canal to watching it again. seriously.)

so which films would you nominate here as the greatest of all time?

Some of the greatest movies in my opinion are the following:

The Godfather 1&2
Saving Private Ryan
Apocolypse Now
The Matrix
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Life of Brian

This is Spinal Tap

there is no other.

-Imp

I feel the same way about old movies, with the exception of Chaplin flicks.

Some comedies:
Annie Hall
Groundhogs Day
The Gods Must Be Crazy I & II
Superbad

I’m going to nominate seven and introduce a category

1.) The Departed
2.) The Devil’s Advocate
3.) The Godfather
4.) The Godfather II
5.) Back to the Future II
6.) The Shawshank Redemption
7.) Forrest Gump

Best Kids Movie Ever

The Lion King

I like the Magnificent Seven, Adaptation, Stranger Than Fiction, Soylent Green, Heat, Syndecdoche New York, Ben Hur, and North By Northwest. For kids movies all Pixar films except Cars.

i agree with The Godfather 1 and 2, as well as The Departed. certainly all great movies. and i might throw in Constantine as well, that movie is amazing. also Lost in Translation seems to be a movie that i am strangely fascinated with, and can watch over and over and never get tired of. Another movie that i similarly never get tired of is A Scanner Darkly, which is just incredible.

and although its hard to point to any comedies that seem “greatest of all time”, at least for me, i think that The Boondock Saints is certainly up there.

we could add a category of ‘directors’, in which case ive already mentioned Kubrick, but i think that Oliver Stone, Richard Kelly and David Lynch are all amazing directors. The Doors, Donnie Darko and Mulholland Drive were three films that i considered adding to the greatest list, although despite how amazing they are im not sure if they are up there with the “greats of all time”, but hey i certainly can see them being considered in that group (actually i take that back, The Doors is definately one of the greatest films of all time, no question about it).

Quentin Tarantino also usually seems to be a very good director; its hard to overlook Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs, thats for sure. and for The Departed and Casino, we could throw in Martin Scorsese as well. i also love The Life Aquatic and The Royal Tenenbaums so Wes Anderson could potentially make the list of great directors as well.

as for a kids category, id say Aladdin over Lion King but thats just personal perference, although my favorite kids movie has to be The Emperor’s New Groove, hands down.

hmmm…Solaris, the original, I was in completely awe of the complete awesome-ness of this film. Full Metal Jacketis just a film I can’t help but watch each and every time I’m fortunate to catch it on tv. for epic fantasy and the loss of the majority of a day…Lord of the Rings…the extended versions!..erm…the only horror of ‘my time’ which was actually fucking scary…Ring…the Japanese version, the sequels and prequel weren’t too bad either. Speaking of Japanese, then I’d have to give Akiraa mention too…greatest movie of all time doesn’t exactly work for me, there’s just too many sweet films, all especially sweet in their own sweet way.

Kids films:
Same as the previous poster regarding all Pixar films minus Cars.
Lion King, Jungle Book, Aladdin…Fantasia. Disney in the good old days.
Studio Ghibli. Today’s Disney…Hand-drawn animation. My Neighbour Totorro, Princess Monoke, Howl’s Moving Castle…
Some old classics…Stand By Me, The Goonies, Flight of the Navigator…

And my favourite film of 2008. Forbidden Kingdom. This film will be a ‘classic’ in another twenty years or so…when I’m an old man.

Withnail and I
Ju Dou
Brazil
The Big Lebowski
Citizen Kane
Naked (Mike Leigh)
Get Carter
Dr Strangelove
Fargo

Great choices except Citizen Kane, it bored the pants off me, I know it was seminal in terms of cinematography but I couldn’t stay awake, it’s the friggin’ sled whoop de do.

Probably just me.

Not heard of Ju Dou but based on your other choices, I think I might look it up.

Soo many good movies.

  • Whiskey Galore (nearly as good as Heroin Galore, Scottish perfection)
  • Ice Cold in Alex (worth waiting for)
  • Casablanca (a triumph of style over content)
  • Fight Club (controversial, but I really think that showed where dialogue can snap and crackle like an actual entity)
  • The Seven Samurai (remade as the magnificent 7 also a great film, but Kurasawa’s is better)
  • The Raiders of the Lost Ark (no bear with me, as an action movie at least its seminal)
  • Candyman (I’m not sure why I include this, except as a horror it is just beautifully imaginative and weird, like Clive Barkers other efforts Hellraiser etc)
  • The Sting (plot twist heaven)
  • The Four Feathers and The Man Who Would be King (same author, wonderful tales of heroism and conversely anti heroism)
  • The Good the Bad and the Ugly (that film is just an unsurpassed Western)
  • Schindler’s List (it may not be strictly historical or anything like the real story, but it does highlight the plight of them plucky Jews, and how a man can save himself in the face of unflinching cruelty despite himself)
  • The 49 steps (what a roller coaster ride from the king of suspense)
  • Gattica (what a wonderfully modern morality tale)
  • The Thing ( Chilling, what horror should be and often isn’t )
  • The Hill ( a prison drama, but more about man’s ability to climb a hill in his head or on the ground)
  • Bladerunner (the philosophical implications are great, but its just stylish and well executed too, the books better but then isn’t it always?)
  • The Life of Brian (comedy at its finest, and just because every time religious people get started I can’t help mentioning it, its not anti religion just anti groupthink)
  • The Last temptation of Christ (such a wonderful interpretation and its here because I didn’t think of The life of Brian once, whilst watching it)
  • Sparticus (I’m Sparticus, 'nuff said)
  • The Lord of the Rings (oh my God they didn’t ruin it, how’d that happen?)
  • The African queen (nice romantic tale with a demon and a witch)
  • Henry V (I wanted to invade France after seeing Branaaaaagghhs performance, seminal Shakespeare)
  • Yujimbo (Kurasawa and 'nuff said, remade as a Fist Full of Dollars)
  • Man Bites Dog (Belgian: made on a $1000 dollar budget, and thus it deserves to be here, how can you make a movie that good on that little money?)
  • Cyrano De Bergerac (heroic romanticism at its finest)
  • Harold and Maude (because it’s just weird and brilliant at the same time)
  • The Usual Suspects (did you figure it out?)

I think I’ll leave it at that as there are too many more and let’s face it no one pays attention to long lists, so I’m just indulging myself.

There indeed is no other rockumentary. In fact if they make any they are crap in comparison as their amplifiers don’t go up to 11.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, closely followed by the original Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory.

greatest movie of all time: the original Blues Brothers

Matrix is definitely up there, just the first one, the second one doesn’t cut it and the third one just sucks.

Then there was that one time that they showed Orson Welles’ movie version of The Trial in my Español class. I fell asleep, but, strangely, I loved the movie. I think it’s the ending that got me. Not much of an ending, is it? Still, it was great.

But definitely, I think, my favorite movie of all time is Brazil. Fantastic storyline, excellent ending, not to mention the catchy tune that I start humming every time somebody mentions the country.

In summary, I’m a sucker for dystopian films.

Oh, and on a more comedic note, H2G2 is pretty good. I enjoy it every time I watch it again. The books are better, but the movie isn’t bad.

Ohh, I knew I was forgetting something, this is about my third edit. Kill Bill. Don’t know what it is about them, they’re just good. Not so fond of the blood, actually, but the world’s probably a tad distorted after you wake up from a coma and find out you aren’t pregnant any more…

Into the Wild

i rarely sit down through an entire movie these days, but saw this one recently and thought it was really good

kinda makes me want to pick up the book

Bruno.
