capitalism and socialism are both wrought with problems. The socialists (or communists) want you to be dependant upon the big government, the capitalists want you to be dependant upon big business.

Socialist and communists are not all evil, just misguided. The Capitalists are just like this as well. Capitalism would work out much better if the government actually did its job and prevented the monopolies but it does not.
In a choice between the two capitalism still allows you to “think” for yourself where as nanny socialism pretty much tells you what you need to think and want.

I agree with Astral about the independence of capitalism. Over the past year I have become a die hard fan of Ayn Rand’s objectivism. There are certainly some facets which I kind of find difficult to function with in the modern times.
I do feel bad for the people with countries who have nothing and live in poverty but we are here and we have the greatest power of all; our minds. It is important to not become a slave to it all the while but it can unlock near limitless potential.
Although I do feel that socialism can work under certain circumstances but everything can “under circumstances” but I also feel this would severly limit the individual.

In europe they are trying socialism a little differently, In France they are so taxed that most of the jobs are provided by proxy of the government. In Italy youths wait as long as possible before even getting a job to continue leaching off a decaying tax structure.
IN America, Social Security and Medicare and our public education system are leaching the government of money.
It also creates a system of dependence for the poor.

the government is a monopoly. Even if the government provides shoddy service, (public schools anyone? if you live in a district that has a bad school they force you to go to it. and in fact PAY people to enforce this idiocy.)you are stuck with that service, because they don’t allow competition.
such jobs also cause mediocrity. Their is no competitive nature (which drives innovation, btw) which forces people who would ordinarily excel, to simply “get by”. No matter how good or how shitty a teacher can teach, they are paid the same amount of money, and can never lose their job.

Totalitarians are socialist or fascist by nature. They are flip sides of the same coin. If our government become complete free market it’d probably be more fascist. There are already fascist laws in place, like copyrights.

absolutely. Programs (private ones!) like the Salvation army and the union gospel mission provide job training, and help people get back on their feet. The government just hands people a paycheck as long as they “look” for a job.

the government doesn’t offer job training. Most unemployment or welfare houses, merely yank the chain. They give the poor money, creating dependance, and allowing for more social service jobs, which enslave more poor to government dependance.
It’s a horrible system.

social security is a huge entitlement problem. The government takes huge swaths of our money away, promising some back when we retire, all the while spending it on fascist and socialist plans.

12% to medicaid
so over half of the US budget goes to socialist policies.
The DOD, get’s a mere 17% of the budget in comparison. Still WAY WAY too much money, for the type of war we are fighting, (I don’t think we need more carriers to get Osama.) but it’s a mere fraction of the money spent on social policies. (the above also doesn’t include the money for education, agriculture subsidies and veterans benefits.)
If the government suddenly stopped handing out money like uncle money bags, and lowered the DOD budget by half, they could cut taxes by half if not MORE. what would happen then?
private industries would pop up to replace the government industries, and because we had more money, we could use our property taxes, etc to pay for the schools we want our children to attend and not have the government force us into poor schools because of where we choose to live.

I am sorry this did not go as you planned but it is the truth. And you live in a culture where the failures of the “communist” ideals are celebrated (the West) and which doesn’t mention the losses throughout history of Capitalistic ideals. Also, I ask you. Prove it. Sure, some people abuse the system but according to you it would be best to let them die. I am not the most giving humanitarian but few deserve that fate. I believe capitalism is right but it is not flawless by any means. Capitalism is a selfish quest for self-ascendance, you MUST step on someone to get ahead.
