It has always struck me that the idea of a message board is so that you can have a forum where you can converse with people that have similar interests as yourself because you are unable (in terms of time or finance) to physically gather together with that person (or those people) and talk to them face-to-face or over the phone.
As a result, some of us are friends, some enemies, and some neutral and if you say something stupid to someone it should not be just taken off the record because if we are in a face-to-face conversation you cannot just pull out a remote control, hit a button, and delete what you said from my memory. It will be up to me whether I choose to forgive you.
Carleas, Xunzian, and many others are in improtant positions as far as this site is concerned, and I certainly do not want to say something that makes me appear to be a driveling idiot myself, but if I do, it is upon every individual here to decide whether to forgive me (if the statement warrants an apology) or whether or not you will ever take me seriously again.
Just like in real life, if you get plowed and say something stupid to one of your friends, then you can apologize for it the next day or later on, but the statement will always exist on some plane, whether it be memory, or it will be carried by sound into eternity where it becomes waker and weaker but never fully disappears. In the same sense, if someone on her made a statement that I found unfair to another person, but followed that statement with two years of consistently articulate, well thought-out posts, I would eventually forget about the statement made two years ago.
Another way of looking at it is, take someone like the President, he is held to even tighter standards than we are. For instance, if he were to say something like, "Fuck all of the stupid rednecks down in New Orleans, FEMA is doing everything they can, and if they want to bitch, let them bitch," now, if that statement were made public, our good president couldn't just press, "delete," and have it washed away.
We should all hold ourselves to an even higher standard, once something is said aloud it is said, and some things may be said in the heat of the moment that you wish you didn't say. On here, though, we may type in the heat of the moment, but to not re-read the post, or to hit the, "submit," button is a choice. Driving drunk is a choice, raping or murdering someone is a choice, you cannot delete choices, do not hide from your choices and always remember:
Friends don't let friends post drunk.
