punishment Determined by afterlife beliefs

the Criminal punishment system is entirely determined by society’s belief in the afterlife.

If someone believes in heaven and an eternal afterlife of utopia when you die, of course they would have no problem putting someone in prison for life, 90 years is nothing compared to an eternity.

If someone believes that you repeat your life over and over when you die as eternal recurrence, then Actually the Prison System is legally torturing thousands of beings who are born then have to be in prison for there entire life over and over in eternity.

My gut feeling is that discussing free will vs determinism is a better (more concrete, potentially actionable) thing to discuss, as opposed to afterlife beliefs, when the topic/result is the criminal justice system

You bring up a good point.

In a shitty garbage world with garbage people, criminals often have no choice but to do the actions they do, maybe if people weren’t so shitty there’d be less criminals and lawbreakers out there. I mean most criminals have dysfunctional families with dysfunctional parents, Also most of the mass shooters were in some way wronged by society and treated like second class citizens by people. How much of crime is really a choice and not just the result of causality of a shitty world-system.

How many serial killers could have been averted if there was just one person who decided to love them, instead of just treating them like refuse and human garbage? I say 90% of serial killers could have been averted, and yeah there’s 10% that no matter what you do will be serial killers anyway.

Psychopaths have zero empathy so loving them cannot stop them from becoming serial killers
This is because their brain chemistry is fundamentally different from that of non psychopaths

It seems to me that those who demand punishment in some afterlife do so because they believe justice as retribution or revenge may not be completely addressed in this life.

That’s not how it works.

If someone had zero empathy (total apathy) they would have no reason to kill first of all, since they are apathetic about everything.

Psychopaths who are serial killers cannot be apathetic about it otherwise they would never kill in the first place. Therefore having zero
empathy does not mean indifference to killing itself only to the moral consequences of it. There will still be a reason as to why they kill

First of all, the phrase “zero empathy” originated on the back cover of the Dark Knight DVD, where it says Joker is a schizophrenic clown with “zero empathy”. Ever since then, it has circulated around the internet like hot butter.

In this discussion, it really has no meaning. If someone actually had “zero empathy” they would have no motive to kill, a killer’s motive is always rooted in some kind of perceived injustice, and in order to feel injustice you must first feel empathy. Second of all there are four different Joker character in batman. The first one motivated by empathy and the death of his wife. The other one motivated by society’s injustice to him based on his appearance. The third one being motivated by empathy for prisoners and wanting to free people from prison. The other one motivated by being rejected off comedy stage like American idol.
