All We Lost Was Time

Postby Carleas » Sat Aug 02, 2008 7:06 pm

Welcome back, everyone!

We had some server malfunctions in the past week and a half, and it took a little while to figure out how to get everything going again. As far as I know, nothing was lost in the downtime. All posts should still be where there were, unless they were made as the site went down (about midnight EDT on the 22nd).

A number of people 'volunteered' (read: 'were pestered into providing') technical assistance, and I am deeply indebted to them. Thank you all.

Happy posting,
Mike

Hey,

Don't know if anyone else is, but I'm still experiencing problems. I can't access the Board Index. Just to let you know in case there is a problem still there.

I've been on a bender for the last fortnight, I didn't even realise anything had gone wrong.

I've been absent for a while from ILP, so I don't know if it's a related problem, but what's the ETA on getting the Symposia back up?

Symposia should be up sometime this week [-o< . It is a related problem. The server needed to be upgraded, so some software still needs to be installed. Hopefully, that will go as smoothly as I expect.
However, I have to say that my priority is making sure the forum is running perfectly. There are still a few users experiencing some problems, and I'll be looking into those before I turn my attentions to Symposia.

Thanks again for your patience.,

Mon ami,
There are still problems. Posts disappear. I am not notified of responses to threads. Submission of my posts to threads seems to take considerable time, often causing duplications.
Are these problems of my outdated computer? They were not really problems before the shut down.

Hi Ierrellus,

First, the two issues that I can give you some information about:
-The server has been sluggish, and I've hired someone to fix that. I'm fairly certain that the slowdown is a remnant of the downtime and related complications, but I'll leave the final analysis to the professional. I'll post updates as I learn more, and I don't expect it to take more than a few days to solve.
-The email client is disabled, which is why you aren't getting emails. This was a quick-fix to get server speeds up, and once everything else is squared away, that too will be fixed.

Now the new issue:
I don't know why posts would be disappearing, other than the server timing-out while a post is being made. If a post completes (i.e. you get to the board-generated post complete screen), it should be there for good. If posts disappear in spite of all indications that posting was successful, let me know immediately, because that's something else I'll have to look into. It might be another aspect of the slow server speeds, but again I'd leave it to the professional to make that call.

Let me know if you encounter any other problems, and thanks for sticking it out.

Update:

-I turned the email client back on, because I realized not having takes a lot of functionality away from the site. You should be able to receive emails from the boards about PMs, subscribed threads, etc. Let me know if you find that not to be the case.
-I also got Symposia going again. A number of people had contacted me about that. Sorry for the delay.

More news as it comes!
