Both the size and random nature of sampling is important if accurate information is to be gleamed from it. So, if you are interesting in the government having accurate information to work on, you ought respond.

Is it legally required of me to fill out the census information that I got in the mail? Can I refuse to send it in, or would doing so mean that I am violating some law?

Personally I dont care at all what the government thinks about the demographic population data in my area, there is no way that I could care any less in fact. So what if "I'm not counted", who cares, it isn't like it would change anything anyways if I were "counted". And its not as if those politicians care about me anyways, so why should I play their game and act as if they care, to keep the whole charade going for their own sake? Screw that.

It's how the government makes sure that you get your fair share in your community.

Let's say you live in a small town w/ one traffic light, then lots of people move into town, and no one completes the census. You'd end up w/ a big traffic jam, cause you wouldn't get the funding for a new light.

That's not very many people. I'd put down that you have 15 people living in your basement who all work on your lawn. That'll get more funding for things like strip malls and paint for that old school down the road.

Yes perhaps. Maybe I will just write down that a few hundred or thousand people live in my house, and maybe I can get my own new district of representation or something.

I guess I will have to vote for myself then. Bummer, I hate politics.

Or you could come live with the other thousands at my house and then I could vote for you instead. . . . but only as long as I get a bribe out of the deal.
