When one is first exposed to psychologically uneasy concepts emotions go from baseline, usually 'downward' into depression if the concepts persist; because of the influence of curiosity, pride, honor, and other things as well adding downward momentum, the concepts will often persist.
When in the depression setting the psychology of the human will attempt to interject comedy into the conscious in an attempt to transition it back towards the upper - happiness. The more one falls, the more the subconscious will attempt to lift - usually with laughter, or hedonism.
The plummet is madness.
Some are eventually lifted back up by the benefits of lurking emotion, such that they return to baseline. Others stay in their own perpetual gravity, spinning.
We can also extrapolate this the other way. Such that when happiness is abundant, the subconscious will find depressive instances to counterbalance an upward trend, lest the conscious take off from baseline all together into paralyzing bliss.
That ascent is... what?
