I just had a dream that my username was turning in letters and numbers that resembled the word stoic and slowly started becoming more random, is that odd?

I hereby propose that all screen name changes, including those made in the past, be recorded in a sticky thread. I also propose that that thread be confined to screen name changes.
"Let us dwell a moment on this symptom of highest culture—I call it the pessimism of strength. [...]
In such a state it is precisely the good that needs 'justifying,' i.e., it must be founded in evil and danger or involve some great stupidity: then it still pleases. [...] If he [man] in praxi advocates the preservation of virtue, he does it for reasons that recognize in virtue a subtlety, a cunning, a form of lust for gain and power.
This pessimism of strength also ends in a theodicy, i.e., in an absolute affirmation of the world—but for the very reasons that formerly led one to deny it—and in this fashion to a conception of this world as the actually-achieved highest possible ideal." I don't think so, have you ever noticed that when you dream you are reading it all seems clear, but if you then study the words you are reading they seem to be gibberish or random. I think that something about making sense of words in context, that we call reading is lost in our unconscious mind. So I have read, there is less communication between the brains various areas when we sleep which might account for it, an important part of the brain that interprets grammar and sentence structure might be unable to communicate well with another part efficiently.

That's a ruddy good idea. I now have no idea who _________ is or was.

Brilliant! Exactly the right amount of underscores.

I feel I'm missing something here, explain it? :)

Is it irony the exact opposite of a circle?

Wherever a process of life communicates an eagerness to him who lives it, there the life becomes genuinely significant. Sometimes the eagerness is more knit up with the motor activities, sometimes with the perceptions, sometimes with the imagination, sometimes with reflective thought. But, wherever it is found, there is the zest, the tingle, the excitement of reality; and there is 'importance' in the only real and positive sense in which importance ever anywhere can be.

I'm slowly entertaining the idea of dissolving windwalker. I mean, I can be one without labeling myself. Perhaps soon I shall become Simply-me - perhaps.
The rivers flow onward - do they change their names?

I would argue that they have no names, that nomenclature is innately human, and thus we cannot actually designate the identity of the thing in itself.

I'm slowly entertaining the idea that there should be limits on how often names can be changed, and that nomenclature is innately not supposed to be such a pain in the ass.

 But why would you argue with me? Aside from the fact that humans must name and label, perhaps the rivers do have mystical names. We have to commune with them in order to find their hidden name.

I like your '____________ ' user symbol. I might ask but you might not reveal what it symbolizes. The first thing that came to me was 'flatlining' but of course that would be a longer line  I'm weird that way. The real beauty of it is that we ourselves in ilp can imagine who we are through your symbol, if that makes any sense.

Anomia is bad for the economy.

How about a spot under "location" for something like "formerly known as"?

Yes.
Oughtist wrote:Anomia is bad for the economy.

Sure, but bankruptcy is good for it, and humane. If someone wants to lose or change their identity, isn't there some benefit from that? And anonymity an unavoidable reality online anyway?

It's probably possible (in theory, not for me) to add a mechanism that tracks the names a user has gone by. But it's not too hard to tell who someone was (if you see a name you don't recognize with a few hundred posts, you could easily check their old posts to see who they were/are), and I think the only harm, if there is any, is to the person changing their name, in loss of amassed cultural capital.

caarleas,
And anonymity an unavoidable reality online anyway?
Then wouldn't the logical conclusion be to simply remove all names and replace them with "anonymous"?
