Which do you prefer to be?

I felt myself surrounded by millions of abandoned pages, by worlds and souls without an owner sinking in an ocean of darkness, while the world that throbbed outside the library seemed to be losing its memory, day after day, unknowingly, feeling all the wiser the more it forgot.”

 I suppose it can be but then what tactic does the hunted use in order not to be eaten or destroyed?

If you're only going to run from the dangerous thing, why be the hunted then? For the thrill of it, or to show or to see that you are more intelligent than the hunter and that you can outwit it?
Being nonthreatening does NOT insure that the hunter will not eat you...unless perhaps he's just feasted and has enough in his belly.
But it might insure that you are not worth the chase to him and he'll leave you alone.
And what if he's chased you and finds you to be untasty? He might just get ferocious, kill you, carry your body in its mouth and throw it over a cliff.
Then you'll just be so much carnage.
