ok I assumed that O-O is a castling taking place between the rook and king that are separated by two spaces, and a O-O-O is a castling btwn the r/k sep by 3 spaces--no? Your queen was blocking u frm a O-O-O, so I'm fairly certain that particular rook has been at a8 the whole game.

I see we've had another mishap that I missed at move 15 (N can't move from c3 to e5). Would you like to revert to that move (as it is, your bishop isn't covered)?

I noticed when I was playing on Chess.com (I think) that the rules are different than other sites, as far as not being able to put certain pieces (other than the obvious king) in check. That totally confuses me. Is it a new thing? To which pieces does it apply?

I don't get what you mean. What I was saying is that at move 12, your knight is at c3, therefor it can't move to e5 at move 15, and thus cannot cover your bishop at move 16. I'm not saying you're forbidden to sacrifice your bishop for nothing, but that if you'd like to go back and redo move 15 where the initial error was made, I'd be more than happy.
