The year 2006 is drawing to a close, as you may have noticed, so the best thing to do is to draw the line, the black line, and settle up the accounts. The moments when we could have been happy; the moments when we might have looked good; the moments when we almost said something smart.
365 days of cinema make for many many minutes, millions of words, hundreds of sighs and broken dreams, about as many rays of hope or bursts of laughter.
Judging 2006 from a cinematic point of view, it appears that no major disruption has affected the tectonics of movie industry. One good movie plus one bad movie equals zero.
Sure, there is The Departed, which I genuinely appreciated for its witty narrative and artful dispaly of skill on Scorsese’s part. Then thre’s that Borat flick, the new Bond movie and Mel Gibson’s Apocalypto, where he flexes his directing muscle once again. There is also Inarritu’s Babel, Almodovar’s Volver, plus the epic journey into the life of England’s Her Imperial Majesty.
It’s hard for me to quantify these movies into words, especially since I haven’t seen all of them
What would you say about 2006 from a cineast’s experience ? Is there a film which you particularly enjoyed ?
