914,742

And counting!

Yes, at ILP there have been [at least] 914,742 posts so far.

So, I was thinking that maybe we might award a prize to the member who has the 1,000,000th post. I know: He or she could be exempt from being banned…or from being picked on by the other members.

Or, sure, come up with your own idea for an award.

Hold on, wait a minute.

I just checked the count again and it’s now 914,738. So we lost posts. Not exactly sure how that happened. But if the count is not an objective truth, maybe we ought to just scrap the part about an award.

Oops, my fault. The original count was 914,731.

So, it’s back on!

What’s so special about 1,000,000? Isn’t it basically the same as 915,368 or any other number?

Gee, you would think so, right? Just like the 7th anniversary of, say, 9/11 is the same as the 10th. I agree: in the end it is all just subjective. But I suspect that distinctions like this will always be made. Must be something about the way the human mind is hard-wired. You know, like the way so many believe in God.

You mean that they are hard-wired to be stupid?

And you are not. :-"

Nope, not objectively.

Now, back to the matter at hand. I take it that you don’t think much of the idea of awarding something to the member who submits the 1,000,000th post. Noted.

Okay, let’s see what others think.

Is not stupidity objectively verifiable like whether Mary had an abortion or not? How is it subjective?

(You did say that it was hard-wired.)

Ah, now I get it. If you keep this exchange going and going and going maybe YOURS can be the 1,000,000th post. Clever.

A typical non-answer from Iambigus.

Pace yourself. We still have over 85,000 posts to go.

lol

I’d like to request that each time someone is about to make the 100000th post, that my oldest post at the time be deleted, so that we stay at 99999.

Wait, iambiguous, is this what you really think? First off, are you sure subjective was the better choice of words over arbitrary?

I mean: you could say the total meaning and web of associations conjured by the numbers 7 and 10 and the concept anniversary are subjective; but, that 7 is distinct from 10, which as a number is also fairly distinct from the concept anniversary, is not mere point of view. Settle for inter-subjective if you must, but they are distinctions which approach a more objective basis. I don’t really understand what pure objectivity might be myself, but, along a spectrum, there are certainly more and less subjective aspects of experience and of what we experience. In other words, things can be more or less objective, but totally objective – that concept doesn’t make sense to me.

Truth be told, it’s best not to take a thread like this one all that, well, literally.

And yet it never ceases to amaze me just how many objectivists actually will!

You see, unbeknownst to Phyllo, one of us is the cat here and the other one is the mouse.

But each of us [in our own way] has to do what we can to bring ILP closer and closer to that 1,000,000th post. Think of it as, say, the nearest any of us will ever come to a moral obligation.

It always amazes me to see a mouse get away through the smallest of openings.

I know what you’re all thinking:

WHAT IF THE 1,000,000TH POST TURNS OUT TO BE JUST LIKE THIS!!

dear god,

I think what’s going to happen will be surprising. At the 1,000,000 th blog, someone will blog something so phylosophically illuminating, that everyone at ILP will be instantly teleported into Nirvana. Those not a member , will be sorrily left behind.

I think it will be surprising, too.

Okay, I will have to keep checking back in, don’t want to miss the illumination event. This raises some issues, though. What about loved ones who are not members of the site? Very sorrily left behind, indeed; I will be sorry. It’s a bitter Nirvana to be separated from those we love (for eternity?). Can we bring guests?
