I think it’s a shame that this happens too often, but I don’t think there’s any way around it. It is threatening, to almost everybody, to bring cherished beliefs under the scrutiny of reason. I suppose that’s why ‘philosophers’ is a label for a rather small group of people, and not just a tautological reference to how all humans are.
Yes, there is a room for reason in religion, among those people who have ‘what it takes’ to engage it in that way. Not everybody does, and not everybody should.
