Ads at ILP

Guess it had to happen sometime. Bandwidth ain’t cheap, as they say.

What I find cute are the links to Philosophy Skin Care Products… because when I think of Philosophy, I think of healthy, vibrant skin.

I can’t help feeling a bit prostituted. What if something I write charms someone into the fray, thus increasing the web hits? Ah but I’m being insensitive. After all, I’ve enjoyed many hours worth of this free service. But over time, I expect some kind of compensation for contributions. I am the exact market for this site…sort of smart but grossly under-educated, which makes me an ideal candidate, I am the fool who who loves to pretend to be talking about philosophy…who loves to talk out of his ass and signify nothing. The market out there will see me in action and feel welcome here, thus garnering Ben or Pax or whoever millions, maybe billions. They have a name for that in hollywood, my friends. It’s called GETTING IT DONE. And by getting it done I mean TAKING IT TO THE STREET BABY.

:unamused: Trust ILP members to have an opinion on everything!

I can assure you that neither I nor my staff see any revenue from these ads. They are there to continue to provide you with the creamy goodness that is ILP.

Enjoy

Ben, just kidding. Thanks so much, i hope you find this all very fulfilling. For many years I regretting not having a circle or a coffee house to frequent with fellow brainy malcontents. You’ve helped me fulfill that dream, and I didn’t even have to buy a turtleneck or anything. The bad news is I’ve recently come face to face with my laziness and mediocrity as it pertains to philosophical conjecture, aptitude and discussion. Again, this thanks to you. It may have been better to go on thinking I was a untapped giant of sorts.

So enjoy the revenue in good health. Funny how it adds up to the exact cent, isn’t it Ben? Hey, no ones counting, kid. You gotta have a little larceny.

I have been around the net long enough to know that you aren’t profiting off the ads, and that their existence here is to help provide operational funds (to keep the site afloat so to speak). I just worry about the legions of Mary Kay cosmetics experts who will now descend upon this site in a ravenous horde all seeking to sell the very latest in blemish removal cream and Botox home injection kits.

Actually I was surprised to learn that there is a cosmetics line called Philosophy. When I think of Socrates standing unrepentant before the Jurors in Athens, or sitting in his prison cell later on, I never associated it with lip gloss and eyeliner. Then again, he was Greek. :stuck_out_tongue:

No doubt. If I ever feel the need to exfoliate, I’ll use only genuine Philosophy products!

Honestly, I never noticed the ad banner until this thread pointed it out. I guess I’m just used to ads being part of the white noise of the 'net.

…but didn’t the banner just appear right now-today!?

It kind of detracts from the whole thing but at the same time I can acknowledge it could be much worse- like if there was an animated ad about a killing cockroaches game for prizes or something horrible like that!

It does kind of make me want to donate, so it doesn’t come to that…

Yeah, I hate those flash ads. Just wait- soon we’ll have flash ads selling four hour erections. And showing them! :astonished:

Oh Goody!!!

Ads: a neccessary evil if it means keeping the site happily on the net. I really missed this virtual-place when it went down a few weeks ago, and I’d only been participating for a short time prior - you people must have been going out of your minds. :astonished:

But please - no pop-ups or linking-to-page adscreens between forums/topics they really bite my arse. :unamused:

great… but wait… does that mean the other 20 hours we’ll have flash ads selling and showing limp ones?

I just noticed something interesting about the ads. They take key words from the title and through the program they run on presumably, 4 web sites appear that have a connection of theme to the words that were the subject of the ad-search. For example in the global warming thread started by chenbengchin, there are links to global warming data and discussion. In the thread titled same sex marriage started by P.O.R. there are links to sites and articles concerning same sex marriage.

And you know, if ads are that dynamic, I think they’re all right.

Poor marketing on the Philosophy skincare company’s part. Most of the members are men, and not GQ-type men, either. Maybe they could introduce a line of male hygiene products; scrotum toner, glans cleanser, foreskin scrub…hmmm…

Sounds alright to me…
