It is way smarter in terms of a narrow type of intelligence - arithmetic or simple algebra. Like how chess engines are way smarter than humans at chess. Yet they don’t have understanding or consciousness.
It could be possible to build a machine that is smarter than humans not at one thing, but at everything, and yet that machine is not conscious.

Direct experience and consciousness are virtually synonymous, but I am actually not so convinced there’s this “I” that “possesses” consciousness.

When you put it that way it’s a stark reality. The only way it wouldn’t be a consent violation is if we chose this life ourselves before we were born.
Some people will maintain this life is a blessing and not a curse, but that’s somewhat unmindful of the millions and billions of humans and animals suffering excruciatingly this very minute and throughout all time.
We just have to make the best of it. Even though humans themselves are very flawed, we have noble ideals and aspirations to strive for.
