In case you don’t like science-fiction, what are we to do in space?
What is more likely:
- humanity will mine and exploit
- humanity will discover and colonize

I predict that we get sick of it and give up.
humanity will destroy itself long before we colonize other moons/planets…

And that might be good thing?!
yeah, we can paint the name “martha stewart” on the first icbm…

Hi Imp,
I hope you are not to commit suicide just jet.
What would it take to paint “Terry Fox”?
There is no hope ?
have faith in humanity…
rotten to the core.

There has been a great deal of speculation of what humanity will do when it achieves speedy and efficient space travel. Given the current state of our world, filled with greedy bastards and evil corporations, the future is more likely to have us mining and exploiting like in the Alien movie series or that Sean Connery flick: Outland. However, I still have hope in Humanity to eventually evolve beyond its petty greed and maybe in (at a minimum) three or so millenniums, we may move beyond this era of raping the universe and begin exploring the stars for new life and new civilizations… dare I say it, to boldly go where no one has gone before.
I’d be real impressed if we managed to achieve a method of inter-universal travel that allowed us to move from one galaxy to another.
If the laws of physics are correct then we will never get away from here.
Sometimes I wonder if that is why we have never picked up a signal from another planet. Perhaps there is something insane about humans that make them not want to focus all effort on making the planet a comfortable place to live. We are fantasy crazy with religion and entertainment. Maybe other civilizations don’t waste time on trying to signal beings that they could never possibly meet.
That being said, I certainly hope that we do manage to prove those physical laws to be a bad theory.
Well said. Humans are fucking sheep! Worthless carpetbaggers who infest the universe with their addictive entertainment, food, and drugs. What self-respecting alien species…like say…Vulcans from Star Trek…would see any point in dealing with us? We’re a mess beyond repair right now and for a very long time to come. The wise solution for other species in the universe is to steer clear of us…except for the occasional abduction and anal probing from time to time. Not to mention the extensive expiramentation with cattle livestock!
If we can’t keep proper care of our own planet, then why should we populate others?
I’m all for the whole “stay here and die” plan.
Do you think it worth a try?
That might be the key.
We’re all headed for singularity when AI overtakes us anyway. After that happens (and it’ll happen well before we reach the stars) all bets are right off.
The interesting thing about that idea is that AI might reach a level that is beyond human, but unless the AI has some method of self-defense Jealous human smash with club.
The boxed AI would have to be pretty smooth talkers to get out of that one.
Can we extend evolution to include the mind, like creating AI?
