Im indonesian, sorry for not so good english … My reading on Descrates has openned my mind to such an extent . I consider myself quite a skeptic person , that i even sometimes difficult to admit my existence. Therefore im questioning myself , am i really exist ?? What if my existence is just pop-outed about 1 minutes ago, but i have been endowed with my present knowledge ?? If i have to admit my existence , i will rather to admit that my mind is the only thing that exist . Because for me, it is really reasonable that our mind is the only thing that exist . How do i know that people around me are all mindless robots ?? Descrates in his meditation said that this malicious evil being can deceive me as long as he want, but he cant deceive me that im thinking , when im not . Or He cannot make me thinking that im nothing , when i think that i am. Is it then , my body is not exist ?? Can somebody gives me explanation to convince me that im exist, in science , philosophy , history etc … thx for helping me for finding the answer…

Well, this is somewhat unpopular in this forum, but here it is. You have to exist, because everything exists. You see, nonexistence cannot exist by definition. So if nonexistence is nonexistent then there is no such thing as nonexistence. If there is no such thing as nonexistence, then everything in the entire universe exists. Since you are part of the universe, then you exist. Even if you are not part of the universe then you are most certainly included in “everything”.

philtecturophy:
If you pinch yourself really hard, it is going to hurt like hell.
So, you can either then decide that you do exist because you feel the pain, or that at least your mind exists, telling you that you feel the pain.
Either way, you can know that you exist.
Descarte said “I think, therefore I am”.
It is just as much that “we are” even when we do not think, so thinking is not necessarily at all times a prerequisite for being. For many people, thinking is not actually a possibility, but they do exist nevertheless. I guess it just depends on what is meant by “I Am”.
There are many things in existence but they do not “think”, barring the great “I Am” from Descartes.
do you exist only when you’re writing/speaking?
as far as this board is concerned, it would appear so…
do I exist outside the board? it cannot be demonstrated here…
must there first exist a place in which to exist? is ones existence is limited by the space? science screams yes, spiritualists scream no…

Even Then Thomas Nagel in his short introduction to philosophy tells us, that such skeptical person like me doubt the feel of pain. He illustrate it with taste of chocolate , that science may detect impulses sended to brain through nerve system when we pinch ourself , but then , can they detect the feel of the pain itself ?? Is it just your mind that telling you so ?? me with my complex body organs system may not exist in the first place. Maybe i can only be able to imagine my existence like i imagine a wax that exist . But , everything so uncertain and keep changing. Archimedes desire to create a globe of terestrial , but then he said , if only i could find a spot that unchangeable and inmoveable. Thus , the only thing i best know is my mind, then , is my mind the thing that exist only?? I dont even dare to judge something exist if i dont have knowledge about it , i cannot judge that the wax exist if i dont have knowledge about it . The wax keep changing its smell , and form , it may getting shorter every 0,0000…1 sec. Therefore, I dont have an exact knowledge about it.
Please help me find the answer , thx…

Read Descartes; read Locke.
After you finish, come back here with more precise questions.
