I have no major qualifications in philosophy. I am just an avid amatuer. I think most of the people who use this forum have been studying philosophy for alot longer than i have. I became a fan about 3 months ago when I read Plato’s republic.
So I hope I am worthy of peoples respect on this forum. I am sorry if some of my views offend but they are my beliefs and isnt that what we are all here for. Expressing our opinions.
Anyway I hope to continue to contribute and in so doing make a few friends and maybe even enemies (LOL) along the way
Philosophy is my college minor. I’m about halfway done with completing my requirements for the minor. I still feel as if there is a lot I need to learn about the various philosophers. I have so much philosophical reading to accomplish that the task, at times, seems daunting to the point where I’m impotent when it comes to actually picking up a tome and reading through it.
I have to start out easy and work my way up toward the more difficult material and theories.
I look forward to reading your opinion on a myriad of issues discussed at length here at ILP.
having a degree in philosophy doesn’t mean you can understand things well, and vice versa.
I have never taken a philosophy course in my life. I’ve only skimmed a few “major” writings, but I’ve experienced a lot of different things, and I enjoy it.
Philosophy can make you laugh, that is one of the most under-rated effects of it.
I think that many books are not worth reading. With many books, cliff notes and the review of main points are enough.
There are those few books that we have all read that are packed with useful things. Every chapeter is revolutionary. Those are usually the only books worth your time in my opinion, unless you just enjoy the read.
I think there are lots of shitty books, that take away from time such as eating fish sticks. (I was not supposed to make sense. I am tired, and am going to bed. good night!)
I’m certainly not qualified for much. my parents wont even let me take more than the minimal philosophy courses! haha!
the rule of philosophy is to use your brain and never stop asking questins. socrates didn’t have a lot of qualifications either, but he certainly found a way to ruffle a few feathers with his thoughts/interigations.
In fact a roman centurion once ran up to Jesus and said “my servants in a terrible state”, so Jesus said “okay take me to him”, but the centurion replied “Oh no, I’m not worthy to have you in my home, just say the word now to cure him”
So Jesus said “Okay, he’s cured”…
"a centurion came to him, asking for help. “Lord,” he said, “my servant lies at home paralyzed and in terrible suffering.”
Jesus said to him, “I will go and heal him.”
The centurion replied, “Lord, I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. But just say the word, and my servant will be healed.
When Jesus heard this, he was astonished and said…“Go! It will be done just as you believed it would.” And his servant was healed at that very hour” (Matt ch. 8)
