Whenever I go to board index the amazon thing pops up right when i am about to click on philosophy or something and i end up getting redirected to amazon can we put that advertisement at the bottom of the page instead?
have you considered waiting a second for the page to load?
or installing adblock
Well, I use it as well but not at work. I still generate some revenue for the site.
This.
if it weren’t for these types of threads I wouldn’t even know this site had ads, that’s how good it is.
yeah but if everyone uses adblock then the site folds or some horrible thing
What do you suppose a single user generates in income by looking at ads for ILP? 20cents a month? A pound? Surely not more than £1.50. I think I’d pay my fair share if asked to.
I wouldn’t really know. I do know someone asked to pay cash in the book suggestions thread.
Someone has to come to your house and ask you?
You are reducing site revenue by blocking the ads.
Whether or not that’s true is actually unclear. We’d have to determine how the revenue is generated before that’s determined. Is it generated on a per-click basis? If so, I wouldn’t click even if there were ads, so… Is it generated on the basis of people viewing the site? If so, my presence generates the revenue even with the ads blocked. And it’s possible that my presence and posting puts ILP on some google searches now and then, which may generate revenue as well. It’s not so clear-cut, not until I know exactly how revenue is generated by the ads in the first place.
Everyone clicks accidentally some of the time. Some of the Amazon books are interesting and worth clicking on.
I’d rather pay 20 cents a month. I’ll paypal some money over in a few months.
There is a version of the site that has no ads, you can choose it in your user control panel (select ‘prosilver_noad’ for board style).
Without ad revenue, nothing catastrphic would happen. I would just pay more out of pocket to keep the site running.
Also, unlike with Google Ads, Amazon doesn’t pay for stray clicks. The only think Amazon pays for are converted sales, so if you’re shopping on Amazon anyway, consider going through the ad to get there and we get a commission.
Following someone else’s suggestion, I’m looking into moving the ad to be beside the forum list. It’s too big to be where it is, and the problem Abstract is describing reinforces that. But it also can’t really go at the bottom, that defeats the purpose of it being on the site at all. If I can make it tall and skinny, and make sure it doesn’t screw up the formatting, putting it beside the forums is probably the best solution.
This is something I’d consider doing, but I’d rather not have to actually see the ads to do it. Would you give me a link that would effectively serve the same purpose, if there is one? I’ll use it as my Amazon bookmark.
Absolutely: amazon.com/?tag=ilovepcom-20
cool, bookmarked.
I’m in England, though…would the link work with .co.uk or what? I’m sure I can work around it if not.
amazon.co.uk/?tag=ilovepcom-20 should work. Adding “?tag=ilovepcom-20” to the end of any amazon url will make it so that we get referral fees for any subsequent purchases.
Doesn’t changing to subsilver or something get rid of the ads? I have no ads ever.
Carleas I get free amazon cards and have spent like 5 grand on there in the last year. I’m using your link from now on.
