Hum, I am thinking 1929 and the stock market crash. He has lost everything, and many did commit suicide.

the man was a florist. the light in question was a lightbulb bomb… one planted by his rival across the street, Mr. Hutchinson, who owned Fantastic Flowers, Inc. (it wasn’t really a corporation, but the inc. brought in more customers.) Mr. Hutchinson drilled a hole in a light bulb, filled it with gunpowder, broke into the old man’s house and switched it out. when the man hit the light switch his room blew up with him in it, and he “killed himself.”
There’s not enough information to come to any conclusions. It could be anything.
