The problem is getting worse and worse. I don’t want to sound like a chicken running around yelling: “The sky is falling! The sky is falling!” But I am getting more and more convinced that the Jews will once more become the scapegoats for the problems in the world. That the world still sees Jews as “Jews,” rather than individuals is already a tell-tale sign.
Recently, I had the opportunity to hang out with a few Russian guys from Siberia, who are staying in the States for the summer. I knew better than to let them know that I was of Jewish origin (that’s right, it’s 2007). These Russian fellas are very well educated, very cool, very nice guys. We all had a great time - became friends. I’d even visit them if I ever go traveling through Siberia. They were talking about going to the beach, and I happened to recommend Brighton Beach, in Brooklyn, New York where there is a large Russian community present. One of the guys, Victor, who happened to be very well-spoken in English, very intelligent and finely mannered (a musician), immediately became dissatisfied and almost looked like he was about to vomit.
Victor said, “Those aren’t real Russians; they’re Jews. Very different - we don’t like Jews.” My best-friend’s girlfriend, Anne-Marie, an Italian Catholic, saw the irritation that must of arose on my face and asked, “Why don’t you like Jews?” Now, although I speak Russian very well, I had not let them known this for I was very interested to learn as much as I could from them without inhibiting my Russian comrades (people tend to be really honest only when the camera of the ‘Other’ is off; or in this case, ear).
So Victor immediately turned to his friend Kolya, and said in Russian, (a lot of the effect is lost in the translation): "Because they all greet one another as: “Good evening my rich/dear one; mwa, mwa,” he made two little kisses in the air. Then, in English, as he rotated his index finger around his temple, Victor said: “They are very clever; very smart.”
Anne-Marie, looking puzzled like the rest of us by his by his reasons, spoke up with, “Well, I’m Jewish.” And immediately Victor said: “Yes, but you’re cool Jewish.”

Yes, you have ‘totally’ misunderstood my point. Some Jews are part of a corrupt and hypocritical elite. Look at the number of Jewish people in Bush’s government, for example, compared to the proportion of the overall US population. But Jews per se are neither part of the elite, nor part of the opposition to it, nor the victims of the backlash against it. It depends on the particular Jew.
My point was rather that by making a specific part of history immune from the ongoing revisionism that the rest of history endures, one makes of the Jews a special case, and in doing so, make them a target for people looking for a scapegoat. While this isn’t the intention of such laws, it is the result. Just as positive discrimination fuels racism against ethnic minorities. Just as having a ‘commission for women and equality’ fuels anti-female sexism, and anti-feminism.
There’s also the rather more abstract ethical point that in placing such a blatant restriction on freedom of speech we make ourselves just like the fucking Nazis we’re thereby condemning. That’s alright, this is a delicate issue. It’s not like I overwhelmed the reader with the clarity of my first post.
Sure, it’s not the existence of the commission that really bothers me, it’s the name. If it was genuinely concerned with equality then it wouldn’t have such a blatantly gendered name. If it was a vague attempt by the government to gain more women voters then it’s utterly ridiculous.
And, like all government commissions, it is sort of in its interests to keep the problem going, otherwise it would lose its funding and status. Once you’ve established a commission it is very difficult to get rid of it, even if it does (by design or accident) solve the problem. When was the last time you heard of a commission being closed down because it had achieved its aim? I honestly can’t think of a single example off the top of my head, though one may come to me in time (or with your provocation).
