I’m reading The Panarion of Epiphanius of Salamis, and his description of the “barbarian sect” echoes a lot of the Anarcho-Primitivist theory of origin of man in his “natural state”, which is by no means a coincidence, Anarchism preserves late Roman and medieval Christian anthropological speculation mostly intact.
This author influenced St. Augustine, here is the section:
Now Joker is always talking about Nihilism and Anarchism as the original mindset of man, but there appears to be a small amount if theological divergence between Joker’s religion, and Epiphanius’. Epiphanius does not assert a Nihilism, merely a lack of knowledge of abstractions… this is prior to the era of the noble savage in Christian thought, but you see the basic concept is already forming. It took several generations for bad ideas to arise, for shit to hit the fan more or less in terms of methodological actionabilitt, such as spells or witchcraft.
There isn’t a insistence on anti-hierarchial thought here. Epiphanius neither asserts nor rejects it outside God, and doesn’t even put the blame on the devil. It was just men, took a while for new ideas to emerge that caused the system to begin to oscillate towards bad and good characters.
Now hypothetically, is a retarded person- I mean like, deeply retarded, a Anarchist Nihilist merely from “lacking complex ideas”. Many kinds of tards exist that if you say “Hey retard, don’t do that” they will stop. Is this evidence of their acceotance of Hierarchy and Statism? Do they have complex ideas like that, or are human minda not motivated by such abstract ideas when responding to commands naturally? What is nature natutally? Hmmm…
Or is Epiphanius closer, in merely noting people were closer to blank states, but still men, abd it took time for complex abstractions to build upon one another syllogistically, but were always motivated abd curious, capable of actions? Are ideas the very thing that seperates man from his primitive origins, and not hierarchy and nihilism? Is a Saint and a Crook, both filled with civilized ideas, equally distant from Adam in the natural state?
Adam can be taken as real or figuratively for our ancestors as far back as you care to imagine. Lots and lots of works like this out there, hits the whole gamut of Roman and medieval speculations on cultural and evolutionary anthropology, still quite heavily explored in modern philosophy. It appears Epiphanius would reject Joker’s claim to being closer to the original mindset of primitive man, because Anarchism and Nihilism are both twisted concepts that evolved out of a long intellectual lineage, are abstract, and are NOT the man himself.
If Anarchism and Nihilism seeks to assert that Joker is in that original state, then Epiphanius would seem to pop a hole in Joker’s balloon, showing how simply put, he clearly is not.
One obvious point of evidence is what happened in Jared’s lifetime, and Joker’s leaning preference or indifference to the Satanism of those acts. Earlier man in his more natural state wouldn’t worry about such thing, now would he? It isn’t a question of freedoms, but causality and priority of knowledge, which man originally lacked. He had “no ego or his own”, to invert a phrase from Stirner.
