This topic is just one of the reasons we live out in the country away from towns and cities. Viable land is needed to survive. it needs a good clean well, a decent stock of wood and a good variety of seeds, you are set, over produce vegies and you have bartering material, Skills are great for bartering. It is much healthier and safer to barter with those out in the country then those in the cities, city folks tend to attack each other during a disaster period, it becomes dog eat dog sadly. my advice; learn a valuable skill that can be bartered.
I have a couple weeks worth of canned food for 4 people. A couple of good sharp knives. Plenty of Batteries. A solid med pack.

I don’t have enough food or cash stored up, but food caches are for staying put.
I am prepared for an extended bivouac otherwise, however.
I could mobilise, fully equipped, in about three minutes. Less, if I were heading out on foot.
So much for TEOTWAWKI scenario.
As for a depression, my lack of cash would be a problem. But even during the Great Depression, unemployment was only about 25%, IIRC.
I can get by on very little. I have for some time, except that I recently spent too much money on a car. I don’t care much about things - everything I own will fit in my car, and I don’t need about half of that.
I have had some menial jobs - that wouldn’t bother me.

KitchenAid can opener, best $10 I have spent in a long time. All else fails get a military one but, carry lots of bandages if you do, those things bite back sometimes especially if a can has dings and dents. ![]()
