this has been mentioned many times in the “help & suggestions” forum, but i’ve rather noticed that few people ever post there. this is a poll in a more populated location to find out whether a forum for people to submit their artworks is a good idea or not.
The Art Forum is a fine idea, if enough people are interested. Now ben isn’t going to go to the hassle of setting up a whole new forum with it’s own mod and a new set of rules if only 4 people show an interest in using it. Personally I have little to do with visuals because I work so hard on words and writing and I haven’t worked out how to upload video yet so I can’t give you samples of the documentary I’m making about my cat.
But if, say, a dozen or more people think that they’d use it on a regular (i.e. weekly or more often) basis then it’s a fine idea.
Like I say, one issue is that it would need a moderator to remove any drunken/hyperactive postings of lewd or otherwise explicit material. I imagine you know the sort of thing/posters that I’m talking about. So, unless there’s a volunteer from the existing staff list (or elsewhere, of course) we can’t really do it because we can’t run the risk of someone posting, say, explicit nudity or pornography or violence and there not being a mod around to remove such things.
The other aspect is whether or not it would place an extra load on the server. Is a phpbb forum designed for such things? You’d have to ask ben or will.
So, those of you that are enthusiastic about this idea, what you have to do is PM around, trying to generate interest and get people to sign this thread/otherwise indicate that they’d use such a thing and then try to find someone to moderate it. If you accomplish that then I imagine that we can set it up.
Yes, an Art Forum is a very good idea.
I have thought about suggesting it before.
Like the creative writing forum, it could be a place where one could express their (awesome) creativity.
Except this could be a place where we would post paintings, drawings, musical compositions, films, ect.
I hope this idea goes through, I don’t think anybody disagrees with this idea.
Am I right?
So I’m putting my hand up to work as a mod in the art forum if it does come along.
I myself am a photographer but I’m interested in all kinds of creative endeavour.
My suggestions for the forum format and content would go something like this:
A venue for discussion specific to issues related in some way to art. (everything from aesthetics to specific discussions about shows, works, etc.)
A venue for members to post links to external resources. Online exhibtions, images, galleries, videos, texts, and so on.
Some kind of mechanism for members to post original works.
I don’t see 1 and 2 as needing heavy moderator policing since they would be much the same as what currently goes on in the forums. I think as far as links to offensive or explicit art works, I wouldn’t have too many concerns provided that the original poster warns people so they can make an informed decision.
Obviously, being able to post images is the big concern, technically and politically. On the technical side, one possible way to deal with it is to use free image hosting alternatives rather than having ILP servers handle the images directly.
Anyone have any suggestions of ways we can sure that posted images meet some kind of reasonable standard?
I hope that anyone who’s interested gets behind this.
If the forum included a discussion of philosophical aesthetics (the topic that first got me into philosophy back in yesteryear) then I’d probably use it quite frequently.
i like the idea of discussions about art, aesthetics, philosophy of art, etc. i hadn’t thought about using the forum for that but it’s definitely a good idea. my original intention was posting personal artworks but i can’t see why that should be the only use of the forum. i appreciate all the responses to this thread, it shows that a lot of people would be interested in such a board, which is good.
The original Word Association began in February of Aught-Five. It was started by a fellow with the handle of MidNiteRide89 aka Marc. He was an infrequent poster, who made his most recent post way back in July of Aught-Five.
On November 15th of Aught-Five the first word association thread reached 230 pages. In honor of Eris, (All Hail Discordia) the thread was locked and Word Association II began.
Word Association II ran from Nov 15th Aught-Five to March 17th of Aught-Six Again it was symbolically sacrificed to Chaos with the dedication of KALLISTI. The gold apple that started the beauty contest which led to the Trojan War was said to have this word engraved upon it. KALLISTI has been translated as “To the Prettiest Oneâ€
Word Associaition III began March 17th and operates to this day.
