Sorry that was supposed to have an other category aswell
I think nearly everyone that frequents ILP knows very well what the two terms mean.
Perhaps I don’t frequent ILP enough but there seems to me to be lots of confusion among posters here about what those terms mean. Especially is the term “god” used equivocally (and sometimes by the same person in the course of one reply!)
Some people (incredibly) even seem to think that to obscure or to equivocate on the definition of “god” makes god’s alleged existence more likely.
Hey its a poll for you guys. If YOU think your a theist, tick theist if YOU think your an atheist then tick atheist.
Are the beliefs you carry atheistic in nature, i.e. do they have, or allow for, an element of “God exists”, or no?
Interesting I was expecting it to go the other way. As atheists are normally outnumbered. Does this say anything about the relationship between atheism and philosophy? Or is it just chance? Or is it that these places are a haven where the atheist can feel like hes being listened too?
Any ideas?
I don’t think any worthwhile conclusions about the relationship between theism and philosophy can be drawn from any poll on this board.
But most professional philosophers are probably atheist, as I believe I mentioned to you in another thread. Seems like I remembering seeing something that indicated the split was like 60-40 in favor of atheists currently – but that may be wrong. Even at that, the % of philosophers who are atheist has to be down from only a few decades ago when atheists were undoubtedly much more prominent in philosophy than they are today. It changed some when Alston, Plantinga, Swinburne and others took up the theist cause in the seventies and eighties.
(a spiritual) atheist
I’m a theist, but whenever I get lazy, I try to convince myself of atheism.
