Beauty - an Evolutionary point of view.

Order occurs as a reaction to entropy, and stands out as distinct because of it.
A byproduct of this self-maintenance, the living organism directs itself contrary to the flow of disorder; it resists fragmentation.

Beauty is symmetry in the physical, material, context. The brain is an ordering organ and so it is attracted, intuitively, to whatever displays a degree of order superior to its own.
Symmetry is another term for order.

Beauty is another term for power.

If we are to apply the definition of symmetry to the context of the mind then beauty here takes on the form of what we call intelligence.
Beauty in the physical realm and intelligence in the spiritual realm constitute appearances of higher degrees of ordering which are seductive to a perceiving mind possessing lower degrees of either.

Ironically the latter inhibits or is hindered by the physical kind of symmetry.
As beauty is an inherited form of order, power, superiority, it is transmitted through genetic code, which inhibits its further development in the individual who inherits it without earning it.
The superior one essentially produces the circumstances for its stagnation. By overcoming all challengers the victor loses this confrontation that keeps him/her developing further.

Beauty hints at the absolute, never delivering it; it impresses the ugly, just as order attracts chaos; then it shatters by the influx it cannot assimilate and organize and fit into its unity.
In the end order capitulates to chaos, just as beauty surrenders to time and reverts to ugliness… leaving behind it a fading memory of its passing.

The tragic-comedy of existing is encompassed by this memory.

The Hedonist makes the sensation his object/objective, and cares not for the outcome because whatever it is it has minimal effect on him/her…being that he is raised in a protective, artificial environment where very little matters if you do your job and pay your dues.

That’s why they do anyone, at any time, with very little concern, other than some biological, innate, genetic, remnants they must “overcome” if they hope to fit in and be Modern.

Beauty of the sexual kind can be considered a recognition and appreciation of fertility: the 7/10 waist to hip ration can be included in this context, as can be height, shoulder width, and hip to waist ratios in males.
Along with it skin health, smell (pheromones projecting fertility and availability) and symmetry of form can be included in this evaluation of erotic beauty.

The female form is shaped to produce comfort, protectiveness, the sensation of possibility, in the male.

In her a man sees potential, of self-expansion.
The attraction to the feminine is an attraction towards self-replication, through a healthy, capable, other.

The “eye of the beholder” is determined by what it then seeks, wanting to find itself in otherness.

Eros: physical attraction.
An appreciation of an other‘s representation of a past order (symmetry, beauty).

Agape: intellectual attraction.
An appreciation of an other‘s present mental order (symmetry, beauty, intelligence).

Both are then divided into two types determined by the mind‘s self-esteem.

When self-love is present, then one finds attractive what is most similar to this self, as this is determined by self-consciousness.
The other attracts as the similar, yet separate; an appreciation of self through the other.

When self-love is weak, the mind insecure, self-loathing, dissatisfaction with how the past is represented by the particular, then attraction takes on the role of being drawn by what promises a reparation, a completion; compensation via the otherness.

Another kind of beauty is the most basic: symmetry of form, or sound (melody) or, I dare say of mind (intelligence).
The Greeks appreciated the symmetry of form that they recognized as beauty, and used their understanding to construct some of the most beautiful human forms in history.
The sloping of the forehead, in relation to the eyes and their spacing, in relation to the harmonious size and shape of the nose, and so on, constituted the elements of a beautiful human face.
In this context basic geometric symmetry and its patterns, is appreciated by the human mind as a higher form of order.

The last kind of beauty man can appreciate is that associated with perfection, in regards to a natural setting.
In this case and within this context, symmetry takes on the form of lusciousness (fertility) and appearance (colors, shades, shapes: the feng shui of nature), as it is perceived from a distance, giving the impression of unblemished, pristineness: Utopia.

This kind of beauty is one associated with a perfect world, as man imagines his favoured reality as being.
In this case beauty is associated with a world unblemished, unsoiled, unaffected, by anything the mind considers vile, brutal, terrifying, and unsavory: a world cleansed and quarantined, appreciated from a safe instance where nothing of the ― ugly shatters the illusion of perfection.

The feminine attraction to order is what makes her the perfect genetic filter: beauty, symmetry of form, and intelligence, symmetry of mind, is, for her, irresistible masculine traits – traits she must reproduce, and merge with, genetically.

Sickness, deformity, dysfunction, manifesting in asymmetry of form, ungracious form, and movement, dullness of spirit, are ignored by her. She refuses to reproduce them, and finds any thought of unifying with them, disgusting.

Cultural relativism becomes an all-leveling steamroller, reducing all to the same flat level of uniform, blandness. For the sake of universal comfort, in theory, all divergence, all representations and attempts to reach a higher level, are lowered to nothing more than a personal perspective; Beethoven and Bieber are equated under the heading ―art,‖ and Coco the monkey and Michelangelo, the human primate, are equated in the need for self-expression.

The same all leveling nihilism that has placed beauty in the eye beholding rather than on what is beholden, now reduces creativity, and value, to a personal utilitarianism.

Impotence dreams of and promotes the eradication of power; ugliness tries to dismiss beauty; stupidity makes of intelligence a matter of chance.

Beauty being skin-deep is another way of dealing with the bitterness, insecurity, of millions of buffoons living but unable to deal with life, having to be comforted, reassured, integrated, so as to maintain the production and consumption levels where the system keeps on chugging along.

And yet, despite all this brainwashing, since childhood, and all this nice civil, rhetoric, the obsession with appearances, image making, persists, only now, marketing offers a solution with coverings, artistry in creating illusion using fabric, shadow, color, lighting… the art of image making where all can slip on a new skin and then feel comforted by the read-made, off the rack, solution to thousands of years of Evolution.

And what beauty in this rotting corpse?
An acquired taste in forbidden flesh…as predator and prey merge in uniformity, and their appearances are clouded in the steam of cultural contrivances.
Nature is now pushed back into the surroundings, a pretty frame for a gilded simulation, an impressionistic painting, self-referencing and self-involved.
From a distance the brush strokes are smoothed over, by a trick of the eye, of perspective, and it all mergers into an ideal spectacle that has no reference outside its own fabrications.
But get closer, place your eye next to its surfaces, if you dare, and there they are, those desperate clumps of vulgar paint, swirling in confused symmetry, attaining the absence.

The fantastic beauty of the hoped-for has to be sacrificed to appreciate this view.
Then the discovery is finally digested and you realize that you do not belong to this kind that prefers the image to the real, and it’s pasteurized, homogenized, by-products are defecated back into the cesspool it feeds from.

Value Judgements of a devolved/degenerate mind…

Mix A with B and whatever comes up is good because none of it really matters when all is guaranteed and taken for granted.

But what if it does matter?
What if it matters so much that it is crucial, as in survival depends on it?

Then casually mixing A with B or C or D or E or any letter in the alphabet does matter, because it determines the chances of an omega coming up rather than a zeta.

The average, dullard, hedonist, thinks his/her choices are meaningless, and so he or she should just follow his/her tastes, not realizing that not only genes but memes determine these choices, and that chance is NOT what natural selection is. If it were, there would be no need for “selection” and random luck would suffice.
Natural selection, and the consciousness, judgement, discrimination, it involves is a natural method of increasing probabilities so that random chance, and possibility is not longer the deciding factor.
If not then cellular division would have sufficed. No reason for competition and sexual choice and awareness.
Divide, multiply and let nature 'sort it out" as some nihilists say.

Selection, is a recognition of patterns, within a given circumstance, environment, and choice, selection, is an increase in probability…

Nature is frugal, efficient. And judgement, consciousness, is how this frugality expresses itself organically.

There would be no need for discrimination, sexual or otherwise, if all was a pot-luck, where whatever comes up sorts itself out, randomly and what is left is “fit”.
That’s the dumb-ass method.
That’s what simpler organisms use…
They have millions of offspring and one of them might survive.
No need for higher brain processes.
Role of the die.

For the degenerate hedonist, everything has some innate logic.
For some it’s God, for others its a numerical code…others rely on sensation.

No matter what, the outcome is intentional…and man need not know what this intent is.
Man as the “last man”.
Here need only follow his instincts, and surrender to force guiding him and his choices.
Everything will turn out fine…it’s all part of the plan, it’ll sort itself out.

It’s why beauty is so subjective, for them.
It means nothing…whether you see it as distinct from something else. Someone, somewhere, will find something of use in it.
There is no consequence to the judgement of this kind of hedonistic utilitarianism.
Man’s choices are directed by another power which need not be understood, only enjoyed.

Mix a chimp with a human and shuffle the deck…see what comes out.
Perhaps something unexpectedly miraculous…a creature that can invent a time machine.
Everything is reinvented, constantly…with every hand a new cards are dealt, at random.
Not surprising that for them chaos hides an underlying order.
There is value in everything…if you look hard enough.
Even better, one was even “meant” to see it as per god’s plan or “intelligent design”.

The practice of coping with the hand you’re dealt is twisted into a, potentially, winning hand…if you bluff the other well enough.
And so farce, fraudulence, fakery is the key here.

Because for the modern you can bluff existence itself.

Mix rubbish and orange juice and…why not, something delicious might be the outcome.
Why be prejudiced?
Why judge, at all, if all outcomes are potentially equally valuable and no hand leads to bankruptcy?

Natural selection reduced to the role of the die…and let’s hope the forces that be help us.

Higher organism discriminate…they are the agencies of selection…more precisely females are.
But judgement can be corrupted, warped, directed…ergo we have genetic filtration becoming memetic filtration where a young fit girl reproduces with a fat ugly rich guy - what women call “pragmatic”.
Here the choice is directed by circumstances which are not natural, but produced by human interventions…resulting in pollution. In this case genetic pollution.

In nature there is no 'we’ll mix beaker A with beaker B and hope that whatever comes out will be fit, and whatever comes out will be “brilliant in its own way.”
This type of thinking is the outcome of sheltering where choices are insignificant, relatively speaking, because all deserve and all have the “right” to and all are “valuable” in their own way.

What if you want outcome omega to come out, more often than not?
What method would you use, as a rational being?
Chance…random mixing and hope for the best?

Sure, we all do with what comes our way…but this is not the question, is it?

Hedonists and Animaline moderns.
Gratification with no focus…for its own sake.

Beauty - an Evolutionary point of view is a non-sensual feeling when perception arise from an object (real or imagined) that has the necessary properties, patterns and combinations that is perceived to facilitate survival of the individual at a more refined or sophisticate level.

For example, food and water will facilitate basic survival but there is no judgment of beauty when basic hunger is satisfied. When an individual has primal lust [linked to survival] any person of the opposite sex will do regardless of any consideration of ‘beauty.’

It is only at a more refined or sophisticate level of facilitating survival that the non-sensual feeling of ‘beauty’ is triggered. For example, symmetry often represent healthiness and thus facilitate survival at a more refined level and generally trigger the feeling of beauty.

For reason of higher and more refined level of survival of the individual and the specie, the neural correlate that trigger the feeling of beauty is adapted in humans.
Like any other functions, the invocation of beauty can malfunction where the neural correlates are triggered by negative impulses. For example some many have their feeling of ‘beauty’ triggered when link with evil acts. As such, humanity must identify such negatives and control them.

Besides the evolutionary point of view, there is also the very interesting Philosophy of Beauty.

But most of all the containers are the ones, which contain the tools of the artists trade, the content of the mind as the interpreter, the synthesizer, of all that beuty, which man himself destructured. Hannah Arendt said this, that the interpretatin was man's undoing, the breaking up of reality into it's many fragments. How coud he help it when so much metaphore lead t a generalized sensibility towad the view that it was inavoidble that man has been chased out of the garden? Modern genetics do not change ethe course of intelligence overnight by assuming some recent traits, they have the earliest beginning of a god induced fatalism, their very intelligence may have doomed him.

But fear not, this does not have to play out in this way, an das ein, can make all the difference in the world. That is why the Jewish belief in , 'if you save one man, you save the world. Our minds, clever and intricate works of astounding perfection, fine tuned better than a swiss wathc or the most advanced computer, which/who can actuallly become conscious not only of thoughts, but to feelings, sensibilities, emotions, may yet, sidetrack the seemingly changeless course of this train we call life into this certain fiasco, by the one man, who we are all waiting for, who in himself can rebuild the future, an alternative future, who may see beauty in the most tangled and broken down junk, in order , to save for others the same capacity, by mere retension of that capacity. I do disagree with those, to whom modern art is but a deflection of true representative reality, because reality changes through the applications of knowledge, and if that changed reality were to be undermined by constant retrospection of of the externalization of those lost elements, than, an internalizatiin of methods to rebuld reality, so as to create re presentations on those new buildings with more stable and balanced fundations, then, the ideal beauty would not fall away from the main theme, in a descent into the an unfounded neo-classical. The nihilized and empty soul, even if placed within most beautifully built habitate, will wither away, from the over-embelished neo gothic edifice, as an example.
This is why, the soul of the work is more important than it’s manifestation. Some deny that such a cpacity can be nurtured, some disagree. The genetic art is a product of the capacity to evolve the strenght to break away from the beast. The beast of deception. The evolution of the soul subscripts the very genetic notion of natural selection. It is the strange, the unusual the uncommon which harbors the mutant gene, that’s capable of breaking away.

I understand.
My OP was actually in response to Atheris’ post in the rant section:
http://www.ilovephilosophy.com/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=187048&start=150#p2514234

Physical, genetic, symmetry (beauty) is cumbersome, slow moving, open to any slight divergence and effect; mental, mimetic, symmetry (intelligence) is sprite and flexible, it leaps and runs way ahead where nothing material can stop it nor aid it.
The former pushes and prods, forcing all to act despite their desires, whereas the latter beacons, lights the way, inspires, wanting you to raise yourself and move on.

The perception of patterns is, essentially, the perception of similarities.
The mind seeks out what it has experienced or what exhibits a repetitive consistence, in other words an (inter)activity which is similar through longer periods of time.
Given that all perceptions of otherness (phenomena, that which appears) are interpretations which are then abstracted and held in memory in the mind, as neural clusters, the recognition of patterns is really a perception of similitude between one abstraction, already in memory (experienced, knowledge) and the next – in keeping with linear continuity – which is derived from the immediate stimulation (interaction) of the environment with the sense organ(s).

The path-of-least-resistance implies that repetition lessens resistances creating

habituation and experience.
We are drawn to the familiar because a neural pathway, once established, is more easily reused, rather than replaced.
Continuous use makes something familiar and easy.

This attraction to the familiar creates behavioral patterns resulting in thinking, species, or culture.

But Consciousness having risen to give direction to life can become detrimental to living.
Awareness is useful when it is limited and simple. When it reaches a certain point, the information it must cope with, can overwhelm it with their demands and disturb it with their possibilities.

The reason why consciousness evolves is to gain the advantage foresight, through the perception of patterns, it provides…and the efficiency in (re)activity it then results in.
In excess consciousness can become detrimental to action or to adaptation, because it exposes the mind to possibilities it may not be able to tolerate or compensate for.

There are two ways this excess can be produced:

1- The most rare kind is that excess produces by an abundance of brain-power – what is left-over when the organism’s needs are taken care of.

2- The most common is the result of sheltering, as is found in modern systems, where even a simple mind can be protected from care, producing an artificially based excess of brain-power. The only thing an animal brain understands is the either/or of pain/pleasure, mistaking both as being sensations that contradict each other. Both pain and pleasure participate in animal consciousness, as a method of coercion. For an animal/hedonist pleasure is the end, because it has no understanding, no ability to project further in space/time.

But this is the Norm.

The most natural path is the path of surrendering to one‘s own nature.
It is the path-of-least-resistance and immediate gratification; a surrender to one‘s own feminine side.
The path-of-least resistance is lubricated with repetition, until it becomes automatic… automated.
After all, remaining an animal, in the most fundamental definition of the term, cannot be too difficult an idea to accept, as organization takes effort than giving in. We might say that denying this urge is what comes at a bigger cost and requires far greater expenditures in will-power and personal risks and sacrifices.

This is where the rare mind and appreciation of beauty as intelligence comes in, and not just anyone will do.

As with all athletic practices the placing of one‘s self into a stressful situation which can be avoided, is the practice of choosing the path-of-more-resistance.
This is a preparatory discipline, where the mind attempts to gain an advantage, in time, by placing himself in an avoidable stressful situation, exceeding the norm, or that which the other is experiencing.

Physical symmetry, which we call beauty, and mental symmetry, which we call intelligence, is directly linked to genetic potentials, appreciated differently by the sexes because of their different reproductive roles.
This is called sex appeal – an attraction based on the desire to either use the other as a means to an end, by uniting his genetic material with hers, or as a desire to be the others means, as to not waste her time on potentially inferior genes.
This leaves us with the third category mentioned, which is not an objective judgment of the others physical/mental symmetry, but of how (s)he makes us feel, which is the subjective element.
Because Modernity is about subjectivity, and feelings, rather than objective awareness, this last category is used to define all other conceptions of beauty.

The other may makes us feel beautiful and/or symmetrical (harmonious) but need not be beautiful or symmetrical himself/herself.
And if the other makes us feel bad, or ugly, or in turmoil, breaking out internal harmony, we ascribe to him/her this ugliness, even if (s)he might be symmetrical and sexually appealing from an objective standpoint.
The modern cannot separate his/her feelings from his/her perceptions, and so subjectivity dominates objectivity to the point where the latter is debased towards non-existence.

They define Beauty to the others ability to make them feel beautiful, or good about themselves, which makes them, immediately, attractive, as a source of this pleasing sensation.
They attribute this to the subjectivity of beauty, revealing, for one more time, how obtuse, and desperate, the average Modern hedonist is, to escape reality, and its, sometimes, immutable, indifferent, determinism.

And so, beauty becomes another Modern toy.
It is undefinable, mysterious, magical, “inner” and totally up to the eye of the beholder, as if the eye of beholding did into evolve to behold what it needed, and that a species no longer shares the same past/nature.
The individual cut-off from himself, his past/nature, is sold what (s)he so desperately wishes were true.

Beauty, or the appreciation of it has a common grounding in human nature, and in existence in general.
We, as organisms, as self-organizing, emergent unities, never complete, never perfect, never absolute, never Being but Becoming, moving towards, struggling towards, are attracted to what we lack…as a hungry animal has a taste for energies it lacks in itself and so must appropriate from other organisms.

As an ordering life is attracted by order, or the assimilation of energies into an ordered state.
Nature, order, symmetry, the world, preexists the emergence of man, or the emergence of any consciousness that can appreciate it.
Of course a mind that is the product of ordering, of sexual methods, of a natural balance, would find these phenomena inspiring, awesome, valuable, beautiful.

Man began worshiping nature, the sun, the plants, the animals, because he was dependent on them…they gave him life.
The order he discovered around him gratified his own need for order.

Even a harsh order is an order a man could understand and appreciate as necessary.

This is also why conspiracies flourish. Man wants to believe that behind every event is a reason, a motive, an order he can comprehend. Randomness scares man.

Just think of that Atheris’ post linked above, here.
Intellectual integrity, the need to know, just for the sake of knowing, cannot be understood by those who must find in knowledge an end result, some positive outcome, some beneficial application.

Because to judge others is to invite judgment…and this might result in one’s own suffering.

But judge we do, only to feel ashamed about it; embarrassed and secretly proud, because we think nobody notices.
We get the usual lip-service to cultural and social ideals, while in our practices we remain firmly in tune with natural selection and judging others entirely on appearances.

We say that “all deserve love and compassion” because we want to reassure ourselves that it will be given to us, in our time of need, but inside, we still remain paranoid and selective with our affiliations and relationships.

It’s all a game… we call civility, politeness, courteousness, respect.
We don’t really mean it, and if push comes to shove, the gloves are off and the hidden truth comes out.
In the meantime, who is hurt by a little hypocrisy, we call honesty, and a bit of selfishness, we call selflessness?

Nietzsche said,

Rarity as in rare beauty and purity need not necessarily go together.

Utter purity becomes soft - like gold, and needs a ratio of impurity, to be alloyed, to yield itself as a useful form for crafting.

Therefore there are two kinds of artists - one who waits for the perfect material, for the beauty-out-there, and the other, who ‘makes do’ with whatever material and stamps his genius, his will into creating something beautiful out of his spirit. Make-do need not necessarily be shameful; it is even a matter of pride to want to shape something from scratch and want to create your own material as a testament to your organizing will-to-power.

What is beauty?

"There she stands, both strong and pure, with head held high and a furrowed pensive sneer plastered across her countenance hinting at strength of resolve; a symbol of quiet dignity and power of Will that strikes you like a slap in the face and reminds you of what is possible and not just an unapproachable ideal to be fantasized over or that can only be found in books and movie screens.

She is beautiful, a fact made all the more poignant by her complete innocence about it, her complete ignorance concerning her own force of presence.
She feels her power, sometimes, she perceives the effects of it on the world around her but she lacks the ego and the presumptuous nature to fully appreciate it.
Her pride is often misconstrued as arrogance and her nobility as snobbishness.

This is power in its purest form. It just exudes itself in genuine honesty and is not the product of imitation, inheritance or surrogacy.
A beautiful woman need not use makeup or dress in flamboyant, flattering garments to become so-she simply is- no more than a powerful woman needs to find authority through social positions of status or economic sway. The most pathetically weak individuals are often those that, when stripped of their labels, acquisitions and status, have nothing else left to be proud of.
Powerlessness can always be recognized by how it tries to acquire control through external sources where personal incapacity is filled by institutional or symbolic strength; the weaker the individual, the uglier the person, the simpler the mind, the more it looks for substitutions for inner power and beauty.
But she needs none of this, others just gravitate to her they sense her authenticity of spirit; they want to partake in it, rub against it, gain a bit of it through association or they fear it, loath it, despise its existence until they want to tear it down and defame it in public view. They feel threatened by it because it forces comparisons and its purity of force and ease of expression exasperates them.

But beauty can’t be completely defined or mathematically measured; we feel it first and then search for the reasons why; we first acknowledge it as such and then we attempt to intellectualize and conceptualize it so that we may try to reproduce it.
The ancients understood beauty and its power, they tried to capture it and reproduce it using its external manifestations.

But how do you capture intrinsic beauty, how do you symbolize spiritual symmetry, how do you grasp strength of Will?

You can only symbolize it using outer impressions that attempt to define inner forces.

What is beauty?

He walks into a room and makes no first impressions of note. He resembles the common man to the extent that he can blend into the throng and get lost in the multitude.

But spend enough time in his presence and he unfolds the wonderment of his being to you. Slowly but surely you begin deferring to him, you seek his approval, his agreement, his friendship, his love.
It happens unconsciously and while you are offering opinions on a multiplicity of subject matter and trying to resist him, your eyes drift his way, they seek out his, looking for reaction, looking for consent, looking for communion.

He doesn’t always speak honestly, often being bored by the simplicity of the world or the opinions trying to encompass it, but when he does he sets a standard to be reached and reveals a perspective that can be ignored and/or
opposed but not completely denied.

He is beautiful in the one way that matters, for a beautiful spirit can result in symmetry of form but symmetry of form doesn’t always hint at spirit.
He is threatening, even though he may be oblivious to it most of the time. He sucks energy out of a room until there’s little left-over to be shared; he draws attention unexpectedly, when at first he is ignored, and even those that despise him for it, unwillingly measure themselves against him and unconsciously try to flatter themselves by tearing him down.

The shadows are his preference, from here he can be himself, but the spotlight is often his unavoidable and uncomfortable destiny.

What is beauty?

I’ve caught a glimpse of it in dying sunlight or through canopied forest paths, when the shadows are cast just right, or in gentle early-morning snowfalls right before the dawn.

I’ve caught a passing resonance of it in euphonious melody and in the angry tension of a driving tune or in the vocal reverberations of someone dear to me, that lingers long after they are gone, or in the unexpected rising of a summer breeze rustling through the grass after a spring shower.

I’ve caught a hint of it through the gentle traces of a tender caress, in the smooth aftertaste of wine and a loving genuine kiss or in a subtle scent wafted up from hidden sources that brings back a memory of a time, a place or a person you’ve forgotten.

In those moments, of perceptive clarity, I’ve enjoyed the transcending truth of my existence and I’ve rejoiced, lost for a while in sensation, with the soft strumming of intuition upon my mind.

But there are two types of beauty, as there are two types of power:
One is attained through artificial means; it is inherited and adorned like finery but never truly possessed.
Like a policeman out of uniform, a priest with no collar, a wealthy man made suddenly poor again or a beauty-queen cleansed from all the exaggerating affects of wardrobe, paint and shadowing, their power/beauty rests on external sources and facades of institutional symbolism and well crafted imaging. They are usually the ones that, when talking about themselves, always
talk about things and objects and symbols; they distract you from the self with external attire and all the stuff they wrap themselves in and hide behind.

A scientist will mention his credentials in the attempt to gain the intellectual credibility and respect he lacks in personally, a police officer will use his uniform and gun to achieve institutional empowerment to compensate for personal feebleness, a wealthy man will use his acquisitions and monetary sway to achieve distinction and a sense of well-being out of reach from him in every other way, a woman may use surgical enhancements, good grooming or the
illusory effects of clothing and cosmetics to hide her plainness or inner ugliness, a man will use large muscles and a well defined physique to overcompensate for intellectual or psychological weakness, a priest will use his collar and station to insinuate piety and spirituality where there is none, a common man may use his career and his social position of authority and community ties to excuse his own simplicity of thought and total conformity with and commitment to the norms.

The second type is derived from the very essence of a persons being. It isn’t bought or learned it is the very fabric of its existence, expressed naturally and with little effort and so with even less conscious awareness, just like a beautiful sunset.
This is why it is detestable to the many, awe inspiring to the few and threatening to the insecure and fearful.

What is beauty?

It has been said that beauty lies in the eye of the beholder and that it is an evolutionary process by which the mind, through psychology and genetic predisposition, recognizes what is worthy of its attentions and how one distinguishes the healthy from the ill.
It has also been said that beauty is power -although it could, more accurately, be restated that it is power that is beauty- as it is an inexorable manifestation of a notable convergence of strength and health within a single entity/phenomenon in space/time.

Even if it is so, this still does not take away from the profound impact it has on human thought. Nobody can ignore the effects of harmony, symmetry and order upon the human mind; no amount of deconstruction and rationalization can minimize its influence. In a universe with so little of it, every instance draws us to it and imposes itself into our reality. We look for it, we covet and envy it and we aspire to and are inspired by it.
I don’t know what beauty is, the closest I’ve come to defining it is as an expression of order and harmony in a universe of chaos and disharmony that comes across as eloquence, symmetry and grace that leaves us breathless.

We all want to know that when we lie on our deathbed and we prepare to be taken back to the oblivion that birthed us, we might have, for at least once in our lives, perceived a particle of it so that we can hold onto its memory, as we drift away; a memory to savor in the void, a singular instance of definitiveness in a universe of uncertainty and then, perhaps, our lives would not have been all in vain."

Orb,

Ease leads to atrophy.

Ugliness, a lower quality of symmetry, forces the mind to compensate.
Stress producing growth.
By compensating the mind succeeds or fails.
Success increases the possibility of beauty, as it releases energies from the compensating duty and applies them towards ordering.

Beauty, a higher quality of symmetry, may result in comfort.
Comfort leads to atrophy, because need and only need produces action.
atrophy deteriorates the order present…

And so the cycles of man correspond to the cycles of civilizations.
Rome fell because when the Empire had attained a certain level of power, in relation to its neighbors, the available challengers, it became complacent, comfortable,…decadent.
Hedonism is part of the stage of decay.
This also applies to the present Super Power, the U.S.

Hedonism is a squandering of energies, once they are taken for granted, have become superfluous…easy to attain.
Materialism is part of this.
This also applies to relationships, and sexuality.
When sex has become superfluous, when no risk, no cost, is associated with it, and no benefit besides the orgasmic release of energies, then it begins to lose its value.
The participants now seek to indulge in extremes, using hyperbole to maintain interest…exploration ensures, as the mind loses focus on the object/objective sexuality evolved towards, and the focus becomes the mechanism itself.
Like an animal. An animal does not know why it is fornicating, why it it goes into a seasonal sexual frenzy. It cannot project further than the immediate, the present…to consider the consequences…as in offspring.
It acts on impulse, a consciousness contained within a shallow perceptual-event-horizon.
It functions on spontaneity, a hedonistic ‘just because’ motive.
No introspection (self-consciousness), no imagination (perception of future probabilities).

With humans the same effect is produced by sheltering.
It’s a form of sheltering, numbing, retardation…a regression back to a primal, infantile state.
Because the costs/benefits are overseen, as with the market system, the mind can focus on the immediate…the pleasure itself…for its own sake…like an animal focuses on the impulse o release its energies, feeling pleasure as well, I’m sure, in the release of pressurized libidinal forces.
Sex loses its severity…it becomes a toy, a pastime, a hobby, an obsession, a hedonistic practice for its own sake.
The cost/benefit reduced to the moment of sensation.

This is decadence.
Rome suffered the consequences when it was infected by the Judeo-Christian virus that further weakened it…resulting in its inevitable demise.

The cycle repeats.

Modernity represents this turning away from reality, this self-referential process (solipsism) which I’ve identified as true Nihilism, where reality, nature, the world is not engaged in directly but indirectly.
The ‘F-Artist’ depicts his emotional reactions to the world, and so he can claim to have value simply because he can convey them…or his marketing team convinces many that he can.

His value as an artist is totally artificial, founded on selling himself. It has no reference point, so anything can now be art if one, or more, individuals think it is so.
Everything is metaphorical, artistic, including language, and so the label “artist” and/or “art”, defines someone who is popular, who is marketable, popular…who can earn money selling his metaphorical symbolism.

Modern art is subjectivity raised on a pedestal.
Sampling, similar to that found in ‘C-Rap’, is rampant in Modern art.
Perspectivism becomes, once more, the great equalizer. You can splash paint on a canvas, have a gorilla do it for you, if you like, or you can place a rock in a glass casing, and declare it art.
The onus is on the observer…his perception, his emotional reaction.
If you can imply to the many that you are saying something profound, that your f-art has a message, then he will be burdened with the need to find it, no matter what.
The F-Artist is a snake-oil salesman, with the right social networking to be marketed in sophisticated ways.

We see this admiration for hustlers, liars, in the modern psychology.
In C-Rap the bullshitter is made into an icon, and though stringing words together in a superficial rhyme, repeating the same egotistical, hyper-masculine message, is all he is doing. If he has the right connections he can make millions selling himself to simpletons in the name of “self-expression”, and celebration of “individuality” - when its merely a self-indulgence.

Same is true for all modern F-Art.
The assembly-line mentality, where production leads to the bottom-line…and the bottom-line, if in the black, is an indication of worth.
Numbers…all about the numbers, the Benjamins, the sales.

Like with all F-Art the practice of abstract nothingness sold as a somethingness, is dependent on sampling, references, deference, appealing to the lowest common denominator in the human psychology.
F-Art, based on no talent, on anything that might display a superior intellect, a higher sensibilities, is the great equalizer. A child can do it, an animals with a paint brush can create it, a computer engineer can manufacture it.

It’s all ‘relative’, as is beauty, for the modern mind. Relative to the stupidity, simplicity, of the observer, and the cleverness of the observed.
Talent is now about convincing the masses of a lie.
There’s no reality to measure the F-Art piece against, It can be anything, at any time, for anyone.
All is art, of equal merit, and so nothing artistic has any merit.

Baudrillard:

Symmetry has nothing to do with beauty, only a poor postulate by nonscientific jumping to conclusion studies.

Beauty are essentially good proportions where the golden cut can be applied.

Lyss,

The only critique which i am able to bring toward this narrative and some of the others, is, that there appears a consensus of opinion regarding the symbiotic relastionship between the Iliad and Paradise lost. This is significant, re: Your comment of Rome’s fall. In fact Christianity, or Judeo Christianity as significant contributors in weakening the Romans have a link in the anger thema as unserlying weakening of the hero type. the anti-hero, thus, has a very long history, and in that sense, Christ too (in retrospect) can be understood as anti heroic,–after all he was supposedto have been a ‘real’ king. In fact, he crucified himself to prove something, a something, again looking backward is not a heroic act if it leads to a madness of a disillusionment. As such the thema is weakened, very early on, and i would, or coud see it as the seeding of inherent human weakness, not as the effects of a hedonistic disintegration, of an empire. It is a subjective weakness sown in Homeric times.

Symmetry is a harmony [‘effortless’ order], and harmony has everything to do with beauty.
Grace is a power.

I think I have said this before here, again;

There are two kinds of sensibilities; one cares for the overall perfection, the overall picture and beauty; and one cares for the minor details, the clarity in the fulcrums around which things turn.

The former may not mind the imperfections and the noise in the details as much as a beauty in the overall outcome, and the latter may not mind the imperfect overall appearance as much as it is conscious of the cleanliness, pristineness or perfection in the details.

Apollonian sensibility responds to overall harmony and strict lines and definitive-ness, while the Dionysian responds to communicability and how it carries itself in the whole.
The former is solid, the latter fluid.
The former puts the onus on the object, demanding of it proportions; the latter puts the onus on the subject, taking it upon itself to adjust perception, to adjust by pushing somethings to the background and bringing somethings to the foreground and enframing it meaningfully, as in-

Where there is safety, superfluousness, comfort, there is stagnation.
The law which follows the path-of-least-resistance applies, as only the willful, those with a strong will, can self-motivate and think beyond the immediate.
The average remain in the comfort and easiness of the immediate.
Excessive contentment leads to stagnation which results in atrophy.
Given that the world is in constant Flux atrophy inevitably leads to increased suffering and, if not endured, to a certain death.
Greater the progress and height of strength, greater the waste and refuse material and failures and deformities.
Christ’s heroism was the inversion of what the notion heroism itself meant to the Romans.

To suffer anything at any length so that one’s inner peace isn’t disturbed. But this, as N. remarks,

“What belongs to greatness - Who will attain something great if he does not feel in himself the power to inflict great pain? Being able to suffer is the least; weak women and even slaves often achieve mastery at that. But not to perish of inner distress and uncertainty when one inflicts great suffering and hears the cry of this suffering - that is great; that belongs to greatness.” [JW, 325]

Know Thyself - Knowing - knowledge can only be an infinite regress; to stop anywhere is the degree of truth-endurance, or the measure of your cowardice in other words.
‘How much truth can you endure?’

Hierarchy.

Courage = Degree of fear being mastered

Gnosis/Awarness = Degree of ignorance the unknown being corrected

Strength = Degree of weakness

Life = Degree of death being resisted

Becoming = Degree of approach towards Being

Anxiety is a lower grade of fear; it is fear before it has risen to the level of an overwhelming sensation.

Anxiety is the slow accumulation of stress, in preparation for the fight/flight mechanism.
It is the preparation, the psychological projection of the coming necessity.

Anxiety is the “what if” in a brain which can project beyond the immediate time/space.

It is, therefore, always a (re)action to an impending need which must be satisfied before it rises to the level of suffering/pain.

Because less sophisticated organisms cannot perceive anything beyond a particular immediacy, they function (reactively) within specific time/space boundaries.
For them anxiety is not a factor because they cannot project possibilities beyond this immediacy. They exist as (re)active organisms.
It is only when a brain has reached a certain level of sophistication that it can project beyond the immediate and experience anxiety concerning the non-immediate, yet possible.
For a conciousness that can exist outside shallow time/space boundaries, the potential for anxiety and fear, increases in relation to its understanding.

The method of acceptance, can offer a relief.
Anxiety is decreased when mortality loses its negativity.

But most rely on the soothing embrace of togetherness, huddling as one, against the immanent.
This dependence on an other decreases the anxiety, as the fulfilment of the need one feels anxious about, is taken for granted.
The burden of feeding needs is shared, reducing the stress, on the individual.
Love, as this faith on the other, this bonding produced by a form of self-inebriation, self-repression, is the antidote, on a primitive level, of anxiety and fear.

The acceptance method is only possible for a very few.

As such, fear becomes an inhibitor of intelligence.
The level of processing potential of the brain can be reduced by the need to cope with anxiety, and fear.
The most intelligent minds can, therefore, fall into the simplest errors because their awareness exposes them to levels of anxiety producing possibilities they cannot fully deal with.
The brain must protect itself, and so it surrenders to the simple, the mundane, the absurd, to protect itself from a threatening realization.

This is something you make up, this does not relate to any known definition of beauty.
