Beauty

I believe that beauty is both inner and outer. I believe that they are equally important. Beauty is a word that is used very often, and there are many meanings for it. I would like to know what your opinions are on the philosophy of Beauty :sunglasses:

Much like the images in a dream are symbolic things, i would guess that our admiration of sertian things stems from our love of power and structure. It is partialy in born and partialy learned.

nice reply…pretty intresting…like they say " there’s more to beauty than meets the eye"…how did we learn what beauty was? Any other opinoons. I believe that outer beauty has its benfits, and when a person meets a person for the first time they only see outer beauty. If you ask me, a young women who’s attractive that goes for a job interview over a young male would probably get the job if the mangager was a male. Now thas just me. What do you think about this? and Beauty in general? Do you believe that everyone is beautiful? Beautiful is such a broad term! There are so many meanings for it, for some a lil insect could be beautiful, a physically challenged person could be beautfiul? Lets hear your opinions

Everyone is beautiful and at the same time everyone is ugly. Beauty is indeed in the eye of the beholder.
The ability to find something beautiful is an attachment to them and it is based on experience and connotations. If you were played images of french people murdering and raping people all the time then youd probably think that French people were ugly on the outside as well as the inside.

I only appreciate beautiful people if they are beautiful inside and out. Sometimes I see someone really good looking and then I see them do or say something mean and then I am just not impressed anymore. then I dont care if they won Miss or Mr World or whatever, I am just repelled, even grossed out by the seemingly illogic behavior. A normal looking person with a beautiful soul is often to me more attractive, probably because his or her behavior is logical and intelligent under circumstances. Nobody is perfect, i know, but this is how i feel about it. beautiful people should have grace and not just act like they are above others.

So lets hear your opinions on this, So if you were looking for a girl to date, and possible marry, what do you look for, her outer beauty, then get to konw her by her inner beauty. What about things that have no purpose? Are they beautfiul because they fulfill something?

I hate to rain on this thread but beauty is almost all biological…

people you see as beautiful are such because they are symetrical, and have bodies that promote a desire to mate for healthy and attractive offspring.

There is a distinct difference between ‘liking’ and ‘loving’ someone, and thinking they are hot/beautiful.

There more you get to know someone, the more your mind can make them appear attractive, but unfortunately it’s just a biological function which allows for you to desire to mate and couple with them. The feeling you get from love is similar to this, but it’s all physiological designed for you to make sacrifices and settle down with a mate, and reproduce. This is what we do after all.

It’s depressing, but you can turn your back on it and let it happen automatically anyways… so you can read those romance novels and swing in hammocks with your lover and all that fun stuff.

That’s right, forget I even said this.

Yes… I did write that.

beauty is very relative. i knew this eighteen year old guy who was so in love with a girl and feared possible rejection so much that he could not even speak to her. but…she was fat and boring looking to everyone else. weird.

Beauty comes about via assosiation… A beautiful day is a day that resembles some day in which you have “good” emotions attached to its memory… Same with women… and everything else…

I won’t deny the possibility that humans are born with some kind of aesthetic prefrence… but I believe that assosiations made via experience often outweighs such inherent prefrences.

I agree, beauty is a mix of associations and biological tendancies of preferance. Accent is a clear example of assocation. For example, I dislike the Birmingham accent because I associate it with slums and depressing factories. I like the Spanish accent because I associate it with sexy latino chicks… and I know some Spanish people.
The same applies to beauty, however the associations are a lot harder to see.

Beauty is a projection of affection for one’s own desires onto another object. Beauty, therefore, truly is in the eye of the beholder.

Think about cuteness, for example. What makes us reffer to a small animal as “cute”, and yet we regard a reptile as being “not cute”? What is the common element within “cuteness” that allows us to distiguish between “cuteness” and “non-cuteness”?

Everyone knows cuteness when they see it in something, but it is incredibly hard to describe what the common element in cuteness really is.

Sorry if this sounded rather confussing…

I think reptiles are cute. not all the time, but sometimes. same goes for bunnies, bunnies look evil sometimes. Isnt it amazing how some people will think you are ugly and others will think you are beautiful? im no oil painting, but I see a lot of ugly people in society who are happily married to adoring and often good looking men or women. its just a thing that i notice and find confusing when people go on and on about beauty…

Yes, but what exactly is the common element in cuteness that we all see? That is my question… :sunglasses:

most cute things lack an immediate sense of danger, in fact, they sort of make you want to protect them, you know? like a little baby or so, or that cute female you enjoy being with ( I think, I am not male so am not sure about that one ).

I would take the approach to beauty as laid out by Lieh tzu:

Be it either beauty or ugly, send it away and disavow either, they both lead to dualistic premises which lead to contentions of bias. Neither are useful.

I think of physical beauty as being physically fit (it even feels better massaging a physically fit person), and then having an even flow to your features. The rest of beauty is from having a glow about yourself, from the way you feel or act. Then true beauty is love, cause love teaches you to change all of your preconceptions of beauty.

Science will admit that everything is energy. Yet ghosts will charge the air they pass through, allowing electromagnetic disturbances. Proveing the soul is energy independent of the physical world.

I think that some souls will charge eachother with some kind of residual effect. While other souls will be on the same frequency, allowing them to be understanding of each other. That’s all I can really say about this…
