Being Dionysus involves instigating a Dionysian decision that effects entire populations; the type of decision I’m referring to here is that which governs what the Self may do.
A decision, a choice, is an act of will based on awareness, ordering of cosnciousness or the energies that participate in the emerging unity.
Dionysus entails a surrender to the ebb and flow of time, a letting go to the chaos or seemingly chaotic flow.
This is why it is associated with inebriation. The will is numbed, the mind clouded, so as this surrender can be made possible.
Dionysian ecstasy cannot make decisions on it’s own; it is a chaos. Only the Apollinian can give form to the Dionysian. The Apollinian gives form to the Dionysian by creating images or language that try to reflect what the chaos is.
A Dionysian decision is instigated that effects entire populations. Where do I talk of Dionysian ecstasy? Of course, it should be like bliss for you to press down upon the millennia in such a way, but that’s got nothing to do with the making of the decision.
I am interested in knowing what a Dionysian decision entails. I am not having a go at you, I am genuinely interested.
Nietzsche’s early treatment of Dionysus is an intoxication (ecstasy) that breaks through the principle of individuation and results in feeling a primordial oneness with the world. But in Nietzsche’s later writings Dionysus seems to have more to do with the will to power. It seems to be more about self-cultivation and giving laws and form to oneself.
A Dionysian decision is one made with the blessing of Dionysus, the god of Superabundance. A good and bad speaks through every perspective, and the following speaks through the Dionysian perspective: What is good? All that proceeds from strength. What is bad? All that proceeds from weakness and ill-constitution.
