Actually, despite being several thousand miles directly north of here, where I was living before in the Canton basin was even hotter - in june and july it often hit 38-40 in 80-90% humidity. Those days were killer, they consited of sitting around next to powerful fans and moving only to get another cold water/beer from the fridge (or to work, but we had the mega-luxury of aircon at work: I’ve never done so much lesson planning in my life!). Exercise happened at 6.am or 10 pm or not at all, and come midday anyone who wasn’t napping was reduced to sitting around fanning themselves and reading newspapers. Not much ever happened at lunchtime (kindergarteners, for example, get a three hour break from 11.30 - 2.30 which is spent sleeping through the heat). The whole place pretty much grinds to a halt until it all becomes a bit more bearable. The relief factor was that the days with the highest humidity normally came with rain about 3 in the afternoon - huge black clouds would start drifting by frmom about 2.30, and by 4 the tropical downpour would have cooled the whole city by a good few degrees. Plus, these afternoons produced some incredible electircal storms - every time felt like the end of the world. In some ways, I miss these incredibly hot summer days. Ho Chi minh gets hot and has rain storms, but not to the same degree. When I sober up I might write a poem about those hot days thunder storms!
Wow. I had no idea. That is so interesting. I am so used to a/c as a matter of course that I’ve forgotten what it’s like to live without it. When I was a little kid, we had water cooler fans in the windows and that was it. But not long after that it was all a/c. Now a/c is everywhere. I don’t have to use it much since the humidity is so low and my place tends to stay cool, but I do appreciate it when it’s needed.
How are the mosquitoes? Do you have to watch out for mosquito borne diseases and stuff like that?
Also, if you ever decide to write that poem, be sure and post it over at CW. I’m totally recovered from my little anal fit I had the other day… so I’m sure I will appreciate it properly.
I’m sorry you don’t have the sun right now. Is that a seasonal thing? Is it like winter now? Here it’s about 60F at night and in the mid eighties during the day, just great! (I don’t know what that is in Celsius.) Here’s a pic of the way downtown looks from across Lady Bird Lake (Town Lake).
