Book discussion via e-mail: Tim Keller -- The Reason for God

I just finished reading The Reason for God by Timothy Keller, the pastor of Redeemer in New York. I’m going to be reading through it again with Seph (from Meaning of Life, an MSN Group) and we will begin discussing it June 12, if anyone would like to join the discussion. Keller wrote the book in reply to books like The God Delusion by Dawkins. You can review it here:

But as I read it through the second time, I’m going to read the footnotes as they are noted (they are in the back of the book, and I rarely read them as I was reading through the book). I just noticed that he stuck a lot of reasoning back there. I will catch it next time around, and encourage anyone who joins the discussion (or just reads the book) to catch it the first time.

Also – the acknowledgements… ya gotta read that first. Page 241. Awww!!!

The discussion will start June 12, via e-mail. We will do one chapter a week (so have at least the first chapter read before June 12), and I will come up with some conversation-starters relevant to the chapter. But, if you read faster than that, and/or have something to say that I didn’t initiate, you don’t have to wait for me, but you may get a better response if everyone has already read the same material.

All who e-mail me to be included in the discussion will be added to a special e-mail list. We will discuss via e-mail by hitting reply all.

I can probably afford to purchase and mail out three books to those who would like to join the discussion. First come, first served. Don’t reply here or PM me, though… e-mail me.

Let me know if you are interested (via e-mail, because I won’t be back in ILP until October).

Personally, I would very much like it if this topic were present here on ILP in the religion section. While I can understand your reasons for not doing so, I would ask that you consider it. Think about it, you’ve got ten days, right?

Okay, Xunzian, but such a discussion, if led by me, will have to wait until October. Why don’t you start one here? If you want to discuss it with me sooner, e-mail me. It is never too late – you can jump in to the discussion at any time. Of course… anyone who ever wants to discuss anything with me is free to e-mail me at any time. They do not have to wait for a book discussion.

It is fourteen chapters, so the last discussion questions will be presented September 11, if we stick to the one-chapter-a-week plan (make plans… God laughs).

The introduction will be included in the week of chapter one, and the epilogue will be included in the week of chapter fourteen.

We will discuss one chapter per week. I will post a new chapter every Sunday at 8pm California time, the first one being posted Sunday the 26th.

Sneak preview, if anticipation makes you nervous:

I’m totally looking forward to it!!!

Discussion on hold and will resume November 24 or a week after the Intro. thread receives a reply (whichever comes first).
