Philosophers like to drink. And quality attracts quality. So it follows that many on this board enjoy the finer things in life. However, given the current economic situation, living that life is more difficult than it used to be. Post the deals that you’ve found, items priced well under market but still quite delicious.
2005 Filhot Sauternes – for $15-20, this wine drinks like something in a much, much more expensive class. I’m admittedly not super well-versed in this sort of thing, but friends of mine are and they agree it is a tasty treat.
Herbsaint --a must for pastis/absinthe lovers in America. All things being equal, I’d rather have the pastis, but while the cheapest pastis goes for ~$30/bottle, Herbsaint (a New Orleans equivalent) goes for just $13! Throw in some peychard bitters and you are good-to-go!
Bitburger – a fantastic pilsner any way you slice it. Dirt cheap by the bottle and absurdly inexpensive by the case. If you factor in the fact that the 0.5L cans are a larger than the standard American 333ml cans, the case is roughly as expensive as anything by miller, budweiser, or coors. But substantially cheaper! (Note: I will sorta have to disqualify m’self from beer comments. There is a store near my house that sells excellent beers at a price that, well, they’ve kicked me out a few times for sitting in front of the prices and pleasuring myself).
Cafe Bustello – a nice Mexican espresso. It won’t win any medals, but it works as a nice eye-opener and work-horse espresso. Worlds above things like Folgers and dirt cheap (especially if you buy the vacuum sealed package as opposed to the tin)
Guylain chocolates – nice pralines, I think they are pretty hard to beat. I buy them when I am not dirt-broke! But they make an especially good treat when I am.
