Every once in a while one of those “male versus female” threads pop up. One form or another. Boys are better at this, girls at that. Girls are smarter, boys are more social, less social, whatever.
Why are these interesting? Is there a common denominator?
I would think that someone who had something of value to say about one of those threads would actually put their observations into that thread, rather than tying up precious server space by making a duplicate thread. That would at once make the person’s point more effective, and be more efficient with precious resources.
Or was the thread that was just created the one being referred to?
I think they would be more interesting if the person creating one were capable of reproducing without the help of whatever gender he or she is denouncing.
That sentence seems more screwed-up then it probably had to be.
Potentiator - It’s really off-topic in any of those threads - it’s “meta” to those threads. I am not talking about any one thread - as I think I said, they pop up from time to time.
Fact is, my eyes glaze over, so I’m not sure exactly which thread I recently saw, but there is one or maybe two, yeah.
Also - I am not making a point as much as asking a question - one that might derail another thread.
I have a lifetime total of sixteen posts, maybe I’ll open up my posting here by mouthing off to a global moderator about creating, “wastes of bandwidth.”
What Faust is getting at, Potentiator, is the whole males vs. females concept which is not specific to any particular thread.
Besides, one out of two topics I create waste bandwidth, that’s just part of the fun of posting on a free site, bandwidth that I am not financially accountable for!
At any rate, Faust, I think the males vs. females thing occurs for two reasons:
1.) It has been scientifically proven that males think differently from females (generally speaking) in multiple aspects, so perhaps the whole males v. females thing transpires when we are actually looking for common ground or trying to prove a point to our counterparts. Not a whole lot different from theists v. athiests debates in a way.
2.) It’s fun, it’s almost like being born into a team.
If you want to get technical about it, it wasn’t “bandwidth” I was bitching about, but only “server space”. The truth is, you would have wasted the same amount of bandwidth whether you started a new thread or not. There wouldn’t have been any more throughput between your computer and the server. But when you do start a new thread, an entirely new “thread entry” has to be created in the database, whereas, if you just post to an existing thread, all you are doing is creating a new “post entry”, which requires less disk space.
By the way, the guys at phpBB have been doing a bang up job over the years with this whole whirlygig =D>
No, I have 18 posts now. But wait… by the time someone reads this, I could very well have 100 posts or even 1,000! Then they’ll get really confused. You say 16, I say 18, the line under my name says X…
You know what’s really funny is that I was just looking for an excuse to get into a fight with Faust because his is the kind of thinking I want to take down. But he was cool about the whole thing. I got your attention, though. Wouldn’t it be a shame if we were in complete philosophical agreement. What fun would that be?
I like you, Potentiator, I was just playing around mundanely. I mess around a lot, I don’t think I have ever known Faust to take offense to anything.
Anyway, I don’t know what we may or may not be in agreement on. I very rarely make absolute statements and I very rarely assume an absolute position on matters.
By the way, you are an excellent speaker, (Well, writer) perhaps you should consider volunteering to represent ILP in the inter-site debate.
I tend to agree. As is the males v. females, thing, but childish stuff can often be the most fun which leads to my second point, it is like being born into a team.
I don’t much care for participating in gender-debates, but they can be a hell of a thing to follow!
There is no appeal for me to take part in such debates, as I see gender-roles as a compliment to each other and not a battle of wills - perhaps it just doesn’t do it for you Faust/it just doesn’t float your boat…
