Can a game make you cry?

  • Yes, I think that sad points in games can be worse than in other forms of media because it’s the death of someone you interacted with.
  • No… I’m still a sucker for a sad movie though.
  • No, I think games usually aren’t sad, but they can certainly make me angry, or get my adrenaline going!

I saw this on my tech news dealios on my google homepage/portal this morning. I decided to ask a few friends in the lunchroom about Aerith’s death scene, and one in particular bit his lip to keep it from trembling and said “It was so sad!” I was just wondering if it makes more sense for people to have an emotional response to a game than from a movie. This kinda helped me realize (I know I shouldn’t have needed help, I’m slow) that video games are popular for the same reason as movies, or books, or songs: because they evoke an emotional response from the players.

Of course a game can make me cry. So can music, a movie, just walking down the street.

And I think everybody who has played FF7 cried when getting to that scene.

I remember we where a bunch of friends getting to gether to play the game together. Or rather is was one of us playing the game and the others watching and commenting.

When that scene hit suddenly there was a que at the bathroom, oh the proud young men.

But I am very biased when it comes to crying, I cry for the stupidest things. I cried watching Godzilla… and I really don’t like that movie.

HaHA! What was sad about Godzilla? I actually liked it, though. Sometimes it’s kind of fun to see huge crazy lizards smashing things.

In the remake, when Godzilla dies, you hear his hearth beating slower and slower and then stopping, I found that profoundly gripping. Just the notion of “the end” of something get’s me all emotional.

It silly really, it was the only time the movie even remotly got to me in any way.

I played the game religiously, and I don’t even remember that happening.

I’m fairly certain I cried while playing FF3. Best of the FF series in my opinion.

games are games why cry?
competiton is good and
sometimes you learn
soemthing new

Because they happen to evoke an emotional response. Its the same reason people cry at movies or to certain songs, or anything else. It touched them in some specific way.

And to FtN:
Nah, I’d say FF2/4 was the best. Best characters are all the characters were cool and I enjoyed seeing the entire story more than any other game.

Actually, when I first played through FF7 like 4 years ago, I also had to cry at Aeris’ death scene. I battled Jenova with tears in my eyes. Come to think of it, I never really cry when I see a movie or play a game, but that moment was just too emotional for me for some reason…

then why am i not effected by the games?
some are good some aren’t doesn’t mean i should give the entire world a reaction and make a big deal out of it geez.

Simply because you are not affected by them.

No one said it was a big deal. Some people cry often, some don’t. Some people are moved by particular scenes in movies or games. You are not. That’s all there is to it.

I did not cry when Aeris got killed. I don’t know if I’ve ever cried because of a video game. However, I know that movies and music have done it plenty. There was just some message or scene or something, that plucked my emotional strings just right and caused me to cry. It happens to some of us.

I have the same feelings, I’ve never cried while playing a game but I understand how a game could effect someone more bcause of the interactivity.

Also, I never really cared that much for Aeris. She’s an okay character I just wasn’t that in to the character. Yet, I still cry every time I hear a particular song or a certain movie.

So, it’s just has to be something that you feel emotinally involved with.

Well I’m certainly not going to disagree that FF2 was a masterpeice. It is afterall the one I would rank second in the series–only to 3 of course.

Yea, FF2 had a really good plot especially the Cecil/Goblez (sp?) twist.

Do none of you see the irony in being sold a product called ‘Final Fantasy 7’ which is to most intents and purposes no different from the product you were sold last year called ‘Final Fantasy 6’?

No?

It was different in many ways. For one, it was the first to be sold on a Sony platform. Each Final Fantasy game, excluding the *-2’s, have a completely different story.

Well I must say that I’m convinced…

(you could have just said ‘no, I don’t see the irony’)

I’m not into gaming anymore since I went hot for philosophy, but, I’d gladly play any Final Fantasy game any time. They aren’t just games, they are experiences. The stories are just very brilliant, and easily captivate you.

There is no irony in that.

Yes I do see the irony!! But I like ironical things. Why do people buy the new sports game EVERY year? Hell, I do it. It’s just different enough that you want it. At least FF has different stories, but a lot of RPG’s are very similar. I guess I like playing essentially similar games. It’s a habit.

What I like is how ironic it is to have a “Final” Fantasy 10!! I know how to name came to be, but it’s still funny.

Almost everybody I know who like cRPGs se the irony in Final Fantasy and make good fun of it too.

I myself am not a big gamer fan, but I have enjoyed some of the FF series, number 3, 6 and 7 are those I find to be most entertaining. But I don’t play them fanaticaly like most of my friends do.

And setting wise there is a quite big differents in some of the games, and some of the games have to many similarities.

But many people just want to get what they know they want to get, if you get what I mean?

Yeah, the old ones were my favorites too. I worked at a video game store for a while. Nothing like being in your 20’s and using the phrase, “Back in the old days” Don’t know how many times I rolled my eyes when some kid would come in and talk at length about how deep the FF8 story was. I’d ask if they played any of the SNES FF’s, and they would say no and I would cry a little on the inside.

I liked 2/4 for the story. Cecil is the best main character for an FF game yet. Plus, I liked not having every character know every spell. 3/6 was also very good. I love all the “old school” FF games. But 2/4 and 3/6 are definitely the best for me. Although 9 was very good in my opinion. Probably because it was more like the old games and the main character was really cool.
