The United States did not hijack planes and fly them into buildings with innocent people in them in retaliation. The United States did not tie a Jihadist’s hands behind their back, push them face down, pull their head back by their hair and cut their head off with a knife the whole time they were screaming. Then place the video of that hideous act to put on the internet.
There are still sleeper terrrorist cells today in the United States planning their next operation. Those prisoners in Gitmo aren’t going to give up information over tea and crumpets. There has already been valuble intel given up by unrepentant Jihadists that has stopped clandestine strikes not only in the United States, but other parts of the world as well. If terrrorists don’t follow the moral rules you talk about and resolve issues without violence, why would you think the United States should sit on their hands and gently try to persuade them to stop? Terrorists are dishonorable cowards who would allow their own children to blow themselves up to further their ambiguous agenda.

Oh, and their agenda isn’t ambiguous. It’s all in the name. A terrorist seeks to change the policy of a country by making the citizens of that country afraid enough that they start demanding, or allowing, the lawmakers to abandon the rule of law, and the principles upon which the country stands.

the whole idea of rights is that people, pre-trial, have certain rights, many of which they lose after trial IF they are found guilty.
The people on Gitmo are mostly pre trial.

At least one military prosecutor, a very right wing conservative man, resigned his work at Gitmo because he was being pressured to get guilty convictions AND NOT to find out who was guilty first.
The act was an attack on the World Trade Center, a symbol for what they view as evil world markets, centered in the US. And the fear and appeasement they had also hoped to bring about (rightly so considering their past experiences with Carter and Clinton), turned out to be righteous retaliation instead.
BTW, the world markets for them are evil if they aren’t controlled by Muslims.
