In ancient history there was the priest who as the servant of god conforming the population to god’s or the churches authority was paramount for controlling the social order. Those that wouldn’t conform were thought of as being demonically possessed where the priest played the role of exorcist.
Any sort of nonconforming to the religious power was considered heresy.
Today’s non conformity to prevailing state cultural institutions or to the government authority itself is now considered mental illness which in effect is the heresy transformed to fit within the secular era.
Today in the secular era the position of psychiatrist has taken over the role of the priest where the church is the state and government is god. Where in the ancient era people were said to be possessed by demons the secular psychiatrist now says people are possessed by mysterious neurological chemical imbalances.
In the ancient past the shaman, witch, or priest would mix up all sorts of magical elixirs to cure the demonically possessed through varieties of natural herbs. Today the psychiatrist does the same only with corporate multi billion dollar funded pharmaceutical industries. We’ve come such a long way secularly, haven’t we?
I agree with most of this. Elsewhere I stated that the psychiatrist may be the new Shaman/Priest. That being said, what can be done about it? What choices do we have? I don’t think anarchy will really work in this situation.
I’ve also had good counselors and psychiatrists. One psychiatrist spent his time with me considering the Tower of Hanoi puzzle. He figured out the math behind the puzzle. Another listened to musical tapes I had made. In short, they treated me as no less a person than they. I was respected and treated as an equal.
But did they also help you in other ways, Ierrellus albeit it is important for a doctor/osychiatrist to show a patient his/her own value. That is of paramount importance too.
As a human being, you are equal to them. But you were there for their expertise. I’m not sure what the balance ought to be of doctor and friend to a patient?
And although like you said the treatment is paid for, why not get the most value out of the time and energy spent there? I’m not saying that you didn’t - I’m only referring to the above.
Yes, that would be the most important message that the doctor has to get across to the patient because without that self-knowledge, how could the patient want to be helped and to help himself?
I think there is more to it…self evaluation…yes…value…yes…but exactly analyzing how a person is working against themselves…and understanding what they can do and what they cant…and then much more if you want to go deeper…most people don’t want to go there…and most people get fluff therapy…and there is hope but you have to have good therapy…
Yeah, they’re there to help you, don’t you know guys and gals? Get you drugged up and be socially or obediently complacent in wanting to get on your hands and knees worshiping authority.

Quality of life at the expense of worshiping authority or giving into obedience at the destruction of the individual. That is all it is. It’s mind control and brainwashing at its finest.
