I’ve been mulling oover the Bush administration’s theory Of
alliances. If we renounce multilateralism in the name Of American
exceptionalism, and proceed internationally with strategic interventions
and movements with ad Hoc “coalitions of the Willing”, how is this any
different than the Roman, British and French methods of imperial
conquest? Each of these empires found allies in their various theaters of
operation, allies Who served for the time being and who then were left by
the way side after serving their purpose. Modern history is littered with
the debris of British ad hoc coalitions.
If we’re going to be an empire why are we an empire modeled after
the Cold War style of US Intervention - where we love 'em leave 'em and
kill 'em? versus the Marshall Plan style where we rebuild a damned
country from scratch and stay there 30 years and our men go native and
marry german or japanese wives? I have no problem with empire as long as its done
well. Yet our fucking government leaves people out to dry time and time
again. Any questions? Any response?
