Is it a trick question? “We” means you, me, and everyone else with a body. I don’t mean to imply the body is a house our soul live in until it moves out- I expect the “soul” dies with the body. But the comparison is still apt. Once I myself am “done” with my body (ie dead) then it’s just an empty container, like the bag my Quarter Pounder and supersized fries came in. I may have reverence for my tray of fast food when it’s hot ‘n’ fresh, but I don’t give it a second thought once it’s empty.
I realize we don’t look at the corpse of a loved one and see just “meat”- our emotions are such that we view it as still being our father or sister, etc. But ultimately once the person has died, I can’t see having a long term sentimental attachment to the body. Ditto for cemetaries. Many people attach significance to the grave of a loved one, and even feel closer to them when they’re there, but isn’t that just a sentimental trick of the mind?
Of course, if you’re religious or believe in ghosts (or some other mechanism by which the “life essense” of a person might persist), then I can understand these feelings. But I’m not that superstitious.
“On the Despisers of the Body”
…
Behind your thoughts and feelings, my brother, there stands a mighty ruler, an unknown sage – whose name is self. In your body he dwells; he is your body.
…
There is more reason in your body than in your best wisdom.

About the whole, body living in a container, that makes sense to me. We’re born into a community, we can never escape society. Our values, tastes, and even our morals and so forth are derived from there. Therefore no thought is ever a “New thought” its just a thought society breeds to us, are we ever free. O goodness forgive me if this leads into a circular argument I have a very bad cold
I agree that it is strange and absurd that “we” can just be “taken”, i would say that “intelligence” is the main problem, wouldn’t it have been better if you were never even able to contemplate this issue? Nevertheless, “being” too is wondrous.
No matter what it is one considers himself to have, it is nothing. Even but forgetting will be forgot, the process of “being” itself is pointless, that is all that matters, why would anyone care if the Earth explodes after your death? Forgotten or not, it doesn’t concern the dead. I shouldn’t even refer to “them” as the dead seen as they “are not”, it would be like asking a tree if it cares whether you kick it or not.
I shall try; Virtual abilities; the virtue of a baker enables the baker to produce good bread; the virtue of a gardener is what enables the gardener to grow nice flowers;etc in this sense virtue clearly differs from person to person , why? because of the different interest in want of; The base for Virtue; how can we ever learn what we do not know? Either we already know what we are looking for , in which case we would never recognize it if we found it. Nothing my friend is served on a plate for us , we need a thirst and price to pay for; to free the will, move energy to and from etc etc Virtue ,then, is life according to reason. Passions have to be extirpated in order to redirect energy needed to shed light inward.Life is a battle against the passions and a mighty fight it is, that is where the will needs to be free from bondage in order to operate and determine what balance is needed to understand death.
Hi LiFe. You seem to be depressed. When I was in deep depression recently and questioned existance of God I soon experienced metanoia. Perhaps you should read some material about it so you could experience it too.
If i may be so bold here is some reading to you about it. others should avoid these links or read at your own risk:
The American Heritage Dictionary defines ‘passion’: Any powerful emotion or appetite, such as love, joy, hatred, anger, or greed. and Boundless enthusiasm.
Do you want to extirpate all of that? Then what would be left? I think knowledge and understanding of passions leads to control and harnessing of them.
When I was little I contemplated suicide and I even went ahead with it, but it backfired, and just recently those thoughts have been entering into my head, I have been cured of them, because I saw photos of what sucide looks like.
I am glad you did not commit suicide, because it would probably have been a big waste. But, a question: pictures of suicides turned you away? What should turn you away should be the fact that ending it now will end it forever. There is no action more rash nor final than suicide.
Now this brings me to my question, Why is death so ugly?
Because we fear what we don’t understand. We don’t understand why we can’t control death. We then equate that fear and loack of control to death itself, and then finally to pictures manifesting that fear. To someone who doesn’t know death, a dead body would most likely seem weird, but not gross.
I kno its only the body and it is physical and there is conclusive evidence for there being a soul, but WHY!!!??
This is where you need to investigate. I know of no conclusive evidence for the existence of a soul, and would never put my money where my mouth was by committing suicide. From everything I have read, experienced, and thought about, I do not believe there is an afterlife nor a soul. So, committing suicide in the absence of good reasons (imminent death, pain before death, etc…) is the stupidest thing someone could do.
It makes me feel so scared, upset and depressed to think that I am going to end in that way and theres nothing I can do about it, what a waste of creation, in that sense.
It is only a waste of creation if you waste it. Most people at your funeral in 80 years will probably not call your life a waste, as you will probably have done a good thing or two by the end of it all.
Accept your moartality, and the fact that we die. Try to live the best life you can, and take comfort in the fact that you led an average life.
