Discussion

Discuss.

Jusat wanted to see if this works for anything.

It does.

It didn’t work for me.

Works for me. The late, great Al Oerter springs to mind. Four golds at four Olympics is some achievement.

I feel it is starting to work for me. Not the OP so much as the subject. It needed to percolate.

Well, moresilly, maybe you just need to discuss it a bit.

shotput is better

Any specific reason you always sign your posts, Imp? Just curious.

This is really coming along nicely.

What does discuss mean?

First off it was an imperative in the OP and a metaphor.
I mean we can’t talk here.
Unless he meant separately, each in our own social circles.

‘It’?

Your initial reluctance to join the discussion, that is. Is it a general reluctance to discuss discussion, or is there something about this particular discussion that leaves you so lukewarm?

Is there something about Al Oerter you’re hiding from us, perhaps?

Is anyone discussted with this?

Not yet.

I think that people that are absolutely sure of themselves as it relates to a certain position are horrible at discussing things. I think that it fails to be a discussion, but the person is really good at lecturing or speechifying.

Such people generally become upset when challenged, and the more legitimate the challenge, the more that the person will regard the challenge as beneath him and will regale the person who challenges the former’s non-existent authority with insult and non-related contentions. Any discourse in a non-classroom setting (with such a person) fails to qualify as discussion.

Contrastly, the individual who knows nothing about a subject (in cases where the lack of knowledge is apparent) is even worse because one gets fed up talking to him and he doesn’t even really have anything to say anyway. That fails to be a discussion because it is not two ways, nor are the people discussing on equal footing with regards to subject knowledge.

And then you have your paraphrase champions. Those are the guys that will go to a website, read every other sentence and then come back with a paraphrase without properly citing the website, “It’s not plagiarism because I said it in a different way.” These people often fail to realise (I used the, “S,” just for you, Faust) that the person with whom they are having the discussion generally also knows how to complete a Google search. This fails to qualify as discussion.

In short, I would venture to say a full 80% of the items that e-communicators label as discussions actually are not.

In my opinion, a discussion (unless there is a very specific and formal purpose to the discussion) is something that should be shot from the hip based on what a person has in their brain at that moment without doing any research. I probably feel this way because that is the way that I approach the majority of my posts and it can sometimes make me come off as unintelligent, but I could give a shit if anyone thinks I am intelligent or not, I’d rather be fun to talk to.

And when I talk about that, you guys should also remember that when I spout off stats and stuff of that nature that I am playing it from memory and could very easily be giving the wrong stat entirely!

I don’t mind throwing the wrong stat out there, though, and if I get called on it, let it be. My memory simply failed me, but I don’t feel the need to be perfect in every single post because that is not the way an actual real-life discussion works, and I think that our goal as e-communicators and e-philosophers is to mirror the real-life discussion experience in as close a way as can be had on the boards.

I am hiding everything about Al Oerter even from myself since I have no memory of this person.

As for the first question, I find taking meta-positions trying. At one level of abstraction I am already in a bit of a daze and start yearning to run down hares in the woods and eat them raw. At two levels of abstraction the yearning becomes all the more unpleasant.

Thus this discussion does not leave me lukewarm but rather overheated in fact.

You realise, of course, that uncooked rabbit is a bit of a health risk.

Rodents, you know.

Sorry to hear it, really.

Even a ceviche is better.

Very easy to make.

You could even keep the marinade in a small belt pouch.

Takes a while, but it’s the prudent thing to do.
