dna databases used by employers

What are the social implications of employers having access to a database of their employees’ dna?

They could start firing people who had genetic disorders that would put their health insurance premiums up. Aside from the gross invasion of privacy that it represents.

Hardly an invasion of privacy…

Potentially your employer could know if you were an illegitimate child of a specific person, or whether your father is not actually your father, whether there are any genetic diseases in your family, whether you are likely to suffer from any specific mental disorders.

As the technology develops they may know what kind of persoinality you are likely to have, if you are liable to become addicted to things easily, etc.
While our genetic code is still holding it’s secrets at the moment, it won’t be long before you can tell much about a person from their DNA.

It is a gross invasion of privacy.

I’ve always beleived that in the nature/nuture argument, the truth is somewhere in the middle, but for an employer to have half of the picture through genetic profiling would be entirely unacceptable to me as a free person. Even the information that might be available to them now is too much in my opinion, corporations are generally devoid of morality as there is no one person who takes the blame for its actions.

How is any of this a ‘gross invasion of privacy’?

Am I being a bit thick here? They potentially know things about you which should be private and at your discretion to reveal. Hence gross invasion. I can’t out it any simpler than that!

I’d be interested to see why an employer would think it’s their business. I won’t even give my boss my private cell phone number, so I’m sure not gonna give him any DNA.

Why should they be private?

Why should they not?

If you want something I have, and can provide no compelling reason, why should I give you anything? And what will you do about it?

You could rob me, I suppose…

rob you? oh gosh… never rob you…

raise your taxes on the other hand…
