Does good and evil exist?

Good and evil has been around for as long as the bible created it but does it really exist? Good and evil is based upon how people think it is or what there religion believes is good or evil. For example the terrorists on 9/11 thought they were doing a good thing according to there religion and there beliefs but we Americans think it is morally bad to do it because you are killing innocent people ( please understand this is only an example, please do not take this to heart). Another thing is good and evil is based upon each individual. I may think something is good or evil because I believe it (I.E. stealing  ) but the next person may think it is morally wrong (I.E to steal [-X ). It is really confusing ](*,)

Good exists.

Evil is the relative non-existence of goodness.

But wouldn’t us Americans think that the terrorists were wrong for what they did even if they thought they were right? Would they be evil or would we be wrong ? So who would be the evil one or is there even evil in this point?

Not everyone will agree with what I posted.

I suppose this disagreement would err on the relativistic side of moral discussions.

All sane people would agree that what the terrorists did was wrong.

Many innocent people were killed.

This is injustice.

These innocent people did not deserve for this to happen to them.

Justice is about people getting what they deserve.

The terrorists felt what they were doing was right because they had no conception of objective morality.

They were consumed by their relative viewpoints, and their prejudice, both of which were ultimately immoral.

Deep down they probably knew what they were doing was wrong but they were so consumed with prejudice feelings of hate, jealousy, etc, that they couldn’t think rationally.

Their hate, jealousy, etc, caused them to justify their relative viewpoints.

Evil deeds exist.

However evil people are merely shadows, as is evil itself.

‘Evil’ only has any meaning in the light of goodness.

Evil deeds come from the shadows.

i like the way you worded that.

I always thought that no people are “evil”, hitler, bush, you name it…are not “evil” per se.
i see it as ignorance if they were thinking in a different perspective they would see that they were doing the wrong thing, but as alpha says being consumed by there own emotions and perspective they do things that what people consider evil, deep down inside we all have the same potential.

So I guess you could say good and evil is based upon the individuals actions? Without there action good and evil is non-existent but once action has been put into play then good and evil will be created? So Action = Good and Evil?

Slayer, it’s my opinion that everything exists. Even unicorns. It’s all about the word “as”. Unicorns exist as figments of my imagination. Good and evil exist as labels which people apply to things which make them feel good or bad. A better question might be…

Why do some consider good and evil to be relevant?

Or…

Why should we consider good and evil to be irrelevant?

Or something like that…

I would say that good and bad (not necessarily evil) exists in the sense that you can be a “good” social animal (coexist well with other moral agents) or a “bad” social animal (coexist poorly with other moral agents), to give a very simplified version of my view. Since ethics can only exist where rational, moral agents interact, this seems like the most plausible explanation to me.

Labeling good and evil as things that are “out there” doesn’t seem particularly useful or enlightening. They are self-contained within interactions between moral agents. Where no moral agents interact, no ethics exist.

I see where you guys are coming from now, I never looked at it at that perspective.

The only thing good that comes out of studying perspectivism is learning the value of considering as many perspectives as possible.

So really it is a worthless subject because it would just lead to more study to study more. perspectivism + perspectivism = more perspectivism

Should I keep looking at these types of books and keep studying this subject? It seems to me like I should just drop it unless I am missing something.

Not really. I’m just saying, learn what people mean when they say, “everything’s a matter of perspective”, then move on. Since we know that not everyone agrees about things because theier perspectives are varied, and since we know that things in themselves don’t just change because different people are percieving them differently, then you can see that to understand the most about what’s up in the world it’s best to understand many kinds of perspectives.

ohh that makes sense. I need to get a lot of perspectives and realize where they are coming from and base my beliefs off of what they say, well to a certain extent, like see which ones I like and which ones I don’t like and just refute or agree with them. I know that didn’t make a lot of sense but hopefully you will get what I mean lol

beautiful

Thanks.
