Does Ignoring The Law Make You "Free?"

Laws are not simply laws, the indisputable laws of existence that cannot be broken, they are written and instigated by men and women in positions that demand moral absolutism. Law is tyranny, even if without it the world is hell. But what do you think about Nietzchian (nearly got it…) and Ian Brady-like thinking that says that free men and women are ones who can cast aside the paper shackles of law?

Show me where Nietzsche says we should routinely break the law. Nietzsche says we should - those of us who can - break free of morality. Laws and moral rules are two different things. Which are you talking about?

Depends whether the laws oppress them or not, if not then they no.

Is a person more free when they commit suicide in a case of death leading to nothingness, and there is a law that says you cant kill yourself unless you do so protecting or progressing the freedom of others ?

no.

Calm down, I’m not as educated in philosophy as you guys, gimme a break. I’m saying why is the law always seen as absolutely right, and absolutely all-powerful and absolute?

Sound like something a school boy would say to me

I am perfectly calm, empty.

I don’t know why you claim that laws are always seen as absolutely right. One reason for courts and judges is that they are not seen that way at all.

Laws just “are”. Breaking them is considered “wrong”, not breaking them is considered “right”. They do it that way for uniformity in prosecution, and general justice. They use the judges and the courts to make sure you’ve really broken one. It doesn’t always work perfectly.

Ignoring a perfectly enforced law won’t make you any freer than ignoring the law of gravity, as the consequences would be just as tangible as a physical fall would be.

But if there really is nothing to the law, (or its enforcement) then ignoring it would allow you to live more freely.

At the same time, ignoring the law could make it more difficult to establish relationships with people who do respect the law, limiting your ability to choose your friends.

/shrug

There are plenty of people who cast aside all laws. Prison is full of them, so is the street at 2AM.

Unabridged from legal constraint is more akin to power than freedom.
Some wise lurkers (and this armchair phil-osopher) know very well that power rarely means freedom. But the illusion persists and has destroyed many a great man.

If I make a law that bans country music, then the Red Headed Stranger would never be allowed into the country. Law is followed for two reasons - convenience, and conformity. So many time I meet people who are simply terrified of the idea of anything remotely related to being outside conformity.

=D>

laws are made for the simple Reason that there are people who take advantage of the weak. whether it be mental or physical. if we all had the mentality to not prey on the weak we would have less laws.

I think that the majority of laws are made for smart-asses, which leads to there being shaky interpretations and the need for precedents. Some laws are moral. Don’t kill, don’t steal, etc. The problem is that there are people who will, instead of just listening, look for loopholes. This means additions and you eventually get laws made for insane instances.

Regardless of laws, you are free to make any choices you want, but like anything else, you are held responsible for those choices. In a place where those choices are illegal, you get more sever consequences.

Generally speaking I am a law abiding citizen. If it’s three AM in the morning on a country road, I will not cross a red light. But often enough laws are passed to protect the ruling elite - Why should I respect those laws?

Sometimes laws are passed where someone inflicts Their morality on society. Why should I respect those laws?

I believe we should all start from the premise that laws make sense, and it makes sense to obey them. Then it’s up to the indiviual to judge whether a particular law is simply for the benefit of a small minority, or a legitimate regulation.

Whether a law is made to enforce reasonable standards of behavior, or is simply an interest group inflicting their morality on the rest of us.

I may indeed respect the concept of law, but reject individual laws.

The only group of laws that I completely respect and obey is the United States Constitution, and a glance at the news shows that it is being repeatedly violated with no particular consequences to the violators.

Power is an illusion.

Interesting…Could you elaborate on this a little?

I guess power is an illusion to human beings, as we are totally insignificant in this universe. Everything we have influence over is completely meaningless, it is only our pretentious egos that would like to pretend otherwise.

Quite…

…but that doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t enjoy living, and reap the benefits of being in the here and now :sunglasses:

Scale doesn’t matter much in the grand scheme of things, but it does matter in relation to what it pertains to. An ant often ignores a human walking by because it has no relation to it in size, and can’t do much to avoid being killed by a human if a human were to try to kill it.
