pretty sure there are other critturs to feed a lion. A lion bonded to a gazelle herd from birth will hunt other animals. The smell , shape, sounds the gazelles make become known as the lion’s pride/pack/herd. It will identify with that animal. So unless starvation is a true factor a predator will not prey on its herbivore family. It cannot , it would go against instincts.
So as long as there is enough gibs-me-dat the fallout can be postponed. In the process both, lions and gazelles become weak and dysfunctional because of a lack of selective pressure.
And all that dysfunction so that some people without a purpose can play saint gives-you-dat to fill a void in their lives.

I don’t know how to tell you this but do you seriously expect lions to stay friends with gazelles over generations and to hunt other game and to not revert back to their established behaviour without continuous intervention by man, like a lion-brain-lobotomy?
What do you think would happen if you introduced a new tasty animal into the lion’s habitat which is part of the lion’s prey-scheme. Would the lion think - ‘Hey, no man ever taught me to hunt this prey, so I won’t hunt it.’ Probably not… but for some reason the lion would stay friends with the gazelle, because friendships last forever or what? - I don’t think so.
Tell you what, if you want lions to be friends with gazelles and stay with their herd you have to make them into gazelles or at least into some kind of animal which does stay with gazelle herds. And that is very much not what a lion is. So you have to destroy what a lion is and make the animal into something that it is not.

Animals kill their own all the time, humans on down to lowest animal. If there is a drive or need to kill pack/ herd / flock/ family any animal will. It occurs daily in this world.
