Daschle’s unreported income amounted to $250,000 over the tree years he recieved in auto/driver car service…
That also caused Daschle to fail to report a short fall of $88,333 for his consulting work.
“I disclosed this information to the committee voluntarily, and paid the taxes and any interest owed promptly,” Daschle wrote. “My mistakes were unintentional.”
Daschle is the second Cabinet official who has had income tax problems. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner failed to report $34,000 in taxes. He was confirmed 60-34, the smallest margin of any of the Obama Cabinet appointments.
So if I’m nominated to the President’s Cabinet, only then I then have to pay these taxes (which Geithner said he wouldn’t pay even still if he wasn’t going to be Secretary of the Treasury (Secretary of the fucking Treasury, of which the IRS is a part)? Is that it.
Any leftist here care to defend this double standard? Kropotkin? Felix?
Heck I would love to just be able to cough up $34,000 just like that. I would happily settle for a few thousand just like that.
Its gov’t, there is always a double standard in triplicate form that is top secret with bad information which is always the other guy’s fault.
This is a democratic republic , slight oxymoron there, emphasis on the moron. As in: We the morons of the United States declare ourselves to be morons, let this truth be self evident by the way we bend over and take it our taxes.
I am so shocked to find out that both democrats and republicans can be corrupt or break the law or lie or not pay taxes. For years I thought it was only Republicans. My innocence has been shattered.
Bring back Bush and have him channel more taxpayer money to haliburton without going through a bidding process and never engaging in oversight so that the VP who used to work for them can have an even better retirement.
On the contrary, these appointments feed cynicism and non-compliance with income tax law. Those in the ruling class like Geithner and Daschle who have benefited the most from the system the most should be held to the highest standard. Of course, the Bush Administration were lax on tax collection in addition to being all tax cut and deregulation. I propose 100% income tax audit of the wealthiest 25%. If these people actually paid what they owe, there may be no need to raise income taxes.
Republicans, of which I’m not one, tend to police their own ranks better (not perfectly), while Democrats promote their screw ups–while the press just asks them, “who’s your favorite in the Super Bowl?”
.
Your follow-on comments notwithstanding, I applaud this response. You do have your limits. Would that something other than a minuscule number of leftists shared them.
In a blow to the “double standard”, Former Senator Tom Daschle, President Obama’s nominee for health and human services secretary, has withdrawn from consideration for the post over his belated payment of $128,000 in federal taxes.

K: Good. I am glad daschle is out. Obama should have known better.
He had 2 other withdrawals from his nominees, right? due to unpaid taxes…Oh this will give tax lawyers a fine leg to stand on with the IRS. If you owe , go negotiate now.
Its either that or cry. Our gov’t has a double standard, that is obvious, has been obvious for as long as I have been alive. The IRS is prime at that, if you are late paying you get charged fees and interests. If they are late paying you , tough.
The IRS is the US’s version of the old Nazi SS. They get surpluses did you know that? They ruin lives and do not care. How can a tax collection agency get surplusses then complain that many people do not pay taxes. Do we get real refunds? No. Do they give people back their homes? no. Do they admit mistakes? No.
its sad, its pitiful, its even worse tha we in order ot get any form of justice have to rely on lawyers. Lawyers make the laws, that allow the IRS to confiscate your property and sell it, before your case has been heard. So if you win, your house has been sold, you still lose.
I could laugh or cry. I choose to find humor in it. Because I have already been angry over it, and fought to no avail.
Get a lawyer and let that pit bull fight their pit bull.
Viva La`USA, sit on your butt do nothing or fight. I fight and laugh.
I did notice Obama did something that bush didn’t do in 8 years and that
is, admit he screwed up. What a concept. Admitting you are wrong.
Taking responsibility for your actions. He admitted Daschle was a mistake.
I wish the GOP would follow suit and actually take responsibility for their actions.
You know, like they claim to be the party of taking self-responsibility, which they never do.
I wonder how that works? I guess the answer is hypocrisy.
They are hypocrites and liars, which I guess is the
qualifications for joining the GOP.
Peter he did not admit that choosing him was a mistake, on the contrary he defended his choice saying that he would have made the best person for the job, but, due to these circumstances he could not have the job. He only accepted responsibility in choosing the nominees. Thats not really admitting any sort of life altering mistake. He probably figured he could slide the folks in quietly. Or, he purposely chose problem people in order to bring in the real ones with minimal questions. Folks that high up do not just make choices willy nilly, they have a reason.

K: AND that is his only responsibility in this matter, choosing the nominee. He isn’t making a life altering mistake, no one said that.
He failed to investigate Daschle enough. However with that said, do you recall bush or his master chaney admitting ANY kind of mistake during
8 years? I don’t. By the way, Daschle was a very good choice.
Faust, I don’t recall that moment. I would think I would remember something like
that, but my memory is not what it once was, so I could be wrong. But somehow I doubt it.
Not out right anymore than Obama admitted outright that he made a mistake, Bush did admit that he wrongly believed in false reports in a round about way. When you get a seat so high your ego tends to inflate with it also your advisors tell you what to say and how to say it. Obama’s people knew in advance what questions would be asked, so they put their own spin doctoring on it. If Obama manages speaking better than Bush right now and admits making any mistake, its just because that is how his handlers want to deal with it right now. Give it a year or two Peter, Obama will become arrogant in his own way. He will become more fluent in the blame game.
Obama is following a specific strategy. If you fuck up and admit it (once everyone knows you fucked up, anyway) it ceases to be news, the people will forgive, and you have a better control of the press’ agenda. Movie stars do it. Nixon should have. It’s not the crime, but the coverup that does you in. Unless it’s just about getting your cock sucked, which people don’t care about as much as they say they do.
