Its a really complex question because there is no short answer to it. The nuances and contradictions need to be unpacked one by one, but i would have to admit that socially the soviet system was better than the western. If for nothing else then for the fact that everyone HAD to work. You were provided with a job, even if you could not make a damn thing you had a job and a place.
If you shut your mouth real tight, knew your place and/or didnt have a single thought to your person anyway, then that system was miles better than capitalism and western liberalism.
The problem starts with everything above that line.
Specifically with the thing i said about the erasure of individualism, identity and personhood.
It was a hard class system and you were expected to act like everyone in your class and (literally) play out your role in a roleplay, such as showing up for all the festivities where you had to celebrate and cheer.
The problem of the soviets has always been the paranoia for the lack of a better word.
It was afterall a system where if you didnt like your neighbor, you just dropped a report at the State Protection Authority and the entire f-ing family was dragged off.
It was a system that didnt tolerate free thinkers and philosophers, you were EXPECTED to take the d**k the state is presenting you with and sit on it with as convincing of a smile as you can manage otherwise someone just might think that you are some kind of counter revolutionary.
And make no mistake about it, the state didnt give a sole f about individual lives.
The collective over everything and if you made waves around yourself, then you were pushed under and drowned without the bat of an eye. No free speech. No free thinking. No individualism.
But if you were a blank enough page or someone who enjoyed riding that schlong presented by the soviets, then you had a real good and peaceful time.
And i do mean the kind of time you could only dream of in the capitalist and liberal system because it does not exist in it.
But just like any system that attempts to reign through oppression: It was rigged to fail from the start.
And personally: No. I dont miss that system for the sole reason that it was a minefield.
Even if by accident you stepped on the wrong toes or left the wrong impression at the wrong place, and you were goan.
Thats no way to live your f-ing life.

Well, I consider myself a Marxist and communist reformer. I don’t want to bring back the old Soviet model. I want to make something even better off of its foundation and template.
A mixture of the Soviet within western post-modernism. Overall a better system.

There is no middle ground between socialism aka communism and capitalism except national socialism, and socialism in that context is not brother can you spare me a dime, but comrade, as in capitalism, or comrade let’s rule the party , -as the politburo will rule you, so the social democrats and the national socialist will turn a dime; meaning wise. One is 6 and the other half a dozen.
Besides, the revolutions for independence led to this awful state of affairs, where peaceful coexistence sees the so called peaceful use of weapons of mass destruction, and besides Musk is working on space X to get us to Mars, by the time all the talking is done, and make sure that Big Brither can take over by the time Little Man gets to unruly.
