Duality the basic assumption of western civiliazation

Duality is the basic assumption of western civiliazation

reality/appearance
good/bad
objectivity/subjectivity
body/mind
god/creation
etc
for western civilization knowledge entailed the finding of a things essence in the flux of change Thus we get a language of concepts concieve comprehend. The paradigm for knowledge then is mathematics geometry . Knowledge is that which is objective external eternal Philosophers will argue over as ASpects of the duality but they assume a duality

Without objectivity objects flow into the flux and flow
but there is another way of looking at the world
an immanental one
instead of essence we can have an object defined by its enviroment
instead of western descriptive we could have prescriptive and normative
ie the west sees a person interms of its essence but a person could be seen in terms of it roles functions relationships

instead of knowledge being about finding a permanent structure behind reality
it could be about mapping of contiuity within the dynamic process it self
instead of essential things
we have spatial things as being temporal flows mutually shaping and being shaped and existence as being a dynamic calculus of contrasting foci
we have patterns of existence instead of discrete unchanging forms

existence is then a dependent interrelationship of mutual influence

THe fact that there is an alternative to western ontologies
shows that this dualistic thinking is only one way to view reality and thus perhaps to see reality as it really is is a matter of not seeing ie eradicating ones cultural assumptions and view undistorted by language and imposed ontologies

I really like your OP, but I think duality is probably the basic assumption of all people, not just western people. The basic qualitative difference between mind and matter is a difference that is self-evident in our subjective experience.

i see alot of posts on duality, but it is usually entirley opinionated.

the “duality” philosophy largley comes from Daoism and requires little explanation.

the perfect example of dualism is as follows

i am cool because you are not.

cool does not exist without its opposite extreme to compare it to. this is the bear bones of dualism.

to say a civilisation should proceed to either extreme is a matter of indifference to me, and a matter of opinion to you

I agree with the post on duality by ladyjane.

What we see lacking in Western civilizations is the understanding of what relativity is.

By the understanding of relativism we no longer need archaic notions of duality in thought.
