In a recent poll it was asked what Obama’s top priority should be as president. 82% of the people asked said it should be the economy. To me, this points to the shallowness of humanity. 6 years ago all people cared about was security and the welfare of our soldiers. Now that there is a little squeeze in the wallet, or even the threat of a squeeze, no one seems to care about the soldiers anymore. No one says the war should be our top priority. What happened to patriotism? What happened to ending terrorism?
We’ve hardly lost any troops. Most of the ones who died in Iraq either killed themselves or died in a humvee crash. The economy is a real issue that effects everyone. Soldiers sign up to fight and die. I feel sorry for the ones who want to do thier jobs, and can’t because too many bleeding hearts can’t stomach the war.
People will only care about what is affecting them directly at the moment in my opinion. That’s why, even if there was one certain strategy that would benefit our country in the long term at the expense of a detrimental change in the short term, I don’t think Americans would want it put into place.
People only think in the now, hence credit card debt, the home loan crisis, etc.
How could it not be best for the soldiers? But soldiers don’t fight wars because it’s what’s best for them, they do it assuming it’s what’s best for their country, future generations, etc.
Fuck Patriotism. (the virtue of the vicious)
Terrorism will never end because then you’d have no enemies to justify wars and the profits that come with.
I’m not a communist. I will not fight for communism. I will, however, fight against those who wish to tear this country down. Anarchist traitors, for example.
Well, has there been an attack on America since 9/11?
Also, the entire concept of a ‘war on terror’ is kinda fraudulent.
Besides, it’s not like the two are entirely separate, more tax dollars = more money to spend on troops. The economy comes first. Furthermore, that pole only asked what the highest priority was; people weren’t answering ‘oh yeah, we love Obama an all cause he’s gonna sort the economy and screw the troops!’ were they? No. The entire post is based on the assumption that people can only ever have ONE priority for their head of government, and I know we’re dealing with Americans here but still…
Had the pole been ‘Do you hate the troops in Iraq’ and 82% answered yes, then you might have a point. But it wasn’t, and you don’t.
On the other posts in this topic: There’s nothing wrong with Patriotism as long as people don’t get too rabid about it, essentially it’s just having a certain amount of pride in your nation, something that is a necessary underpinning for any concept of civic duties or rights and responsibilities in society, it’s just a shame that the concept is routinely kidnapped and raped by every passing fascist propaganda machine, now it’s daren’t show its face at parties.
On supporting the war: always make the distinction, don’t support the war (if you don’t want to) always support the troops. The latter should rightly act as a limit on the former in some situations. Personally I support the presence of troops in Iraq / Afghanistan if and only if it’s the best thing for the country. In the former case that is at best debatable.
Edit: replaced the letter ‘e’ with the letters ‘ing’, and ‘which’ with ‘something that’ in the eleventh sentence.
Phoebus, I think you’re feeling guilt about your selfishness. You need to get over it and accept it that you don’t give a shit about America, the troops, or terrorism, and only care about making a buck. It’s a good thing in a way. You’re in the company of 82% of Americans.
